RAQUEL MILLER: THE BACKGROUND, THE BOXER, THE BELIEF, THE BEAUTY – pt.4

When one thinks of top ten beauties they typically don’t think Female Boxer. Well, that all changed when Laila Ali, daughter of the famed Muhammad Ali, started boxing. Laila Ali is runway model beautiful, and just as much as she is a knock out in beauty – she can literally also knock you out in the ring!

This is also true for Raquel Miller, female boxer and Olympic Trial Qualifier. Filled with beauty and coupled with grace, Raquel Miller – as Laila Ali – will redefine beauty in a very brutal sport.

Raquel Miller displays the "BEAUTY" of Boxing

As an Olympic hopeful, Raquel Miller was asked “How will you handle when young girls start staying they want to be JUST LIKE YOU”? Her answer – after blushing with a girly shrug and an amazing smile – was stated with boldness, “To be honest I would tell them “be better than me.” Take my story, take the good from it – learn from the bad in my story – and if anything I want them to know that they can be anything they set their minds to be. I want them to believe in themselves without doubt – no matter what anybody tells you. So, if they look up to me – I am thankful for that because I work really really hard and I am a true believer in God and I believe if you look up to me then look up to God because God has brought me this far. With Him (God) nothing would be possible for me and if nothing else – as a female as a young woman – believe in yourself. Believe in yourself and ask God for guidance and don’t let anything or anybody turn you away from your dreams. If God put it in your heart to do it then that settles it. No one else can stop you from what God has for you. And so, I’d tell them look at me – look at what I have done and push past it and be even better because if I can do this imagine what you can do.”

Single Fella’s don’t be too quick to Google Searching “Raquel Miller” before you understand her thoughts on her having a love interest. “Boxing is my love interest. I had a guy in my life and then I realized he wasn’t the guy for me. It was ironic how I really had to come to terms with that, but I’ve come to a point in my life where – like I tell all ladies – love yourself first and love yourself to know that if he is not for you – he is just not for you. No matter how many times you try to mend it, break it, fix it, glue it – let it go. Love yourself because honestly if I would have stayed in that relationship I wouldn’t be where I am today. It took a lot of soul searching and a lot of crying and praying. I kept telling God “God take the people that are not supposed to be in my life out and bring the people in.” So, he is not a part of my life anymore, so I had to trust God. You cannot ask God for something and then not listen to it when HE puts it in your ear and in your heart. So, no – right now, boxing is my love.

I always tell guys I am not willing to risk what’s my dream for you right now. And, if you love me and want to be with me then you will get on board with my dream and if not, then the dream rolls on.”

However, Raquel is not against love accompanying her dreams. When asked, ‘How would a guy get on board with your dream considering your schedule’ she stated, “Run with me – be supportive – come practice with me. See what I do because I work fulltime. My days consist of practice, training, and work. And so, if someone wants to be a part of my life they would have to get on my schedule. They say “When can I hang out with you?” Well, come to church with me on Sundays – those are my off days. Saturdays I’m practicing and after practice I am tired – so Sundays are my only rest day because God told me I need to rest. So, I go to church and I just kick back and that’s my only day. So, I tell them if you want to hang out with me – if you don’t love God you can’t love me – that’s a good place to start, come to church with me.” It’s safe to say the love interest of Raquel Miller must be a fan of the sport of boxing, supportive of her dreams within the sport and must be in shape himself.

While interviewing Raquel for these series of articles she was wearing Winter Green nail polish beneath her hand wrappings and gloves. She shared, “I believe that I am going to box on my terms. I still love lip gloss and I still love getting my hair done. I believe it – I’m like people see me outside of boxing and say “You don’t box” and I’m like ‘you think I don’t box, but I box.” But, boxing does not define me – it is just something that I do. It’s just like people go to work and I just happen to beat people up. No, but in reality, I am still a girly girl outside of boxing – I still love to wear my heels and love my pink. I still love everything there is to being a girl. I still get my nails done. I believe in boxing on your own terms. As you see I have pink headgear and, you know, I just do my thing and I do boxing my way and no one can tell me how to do it.”

She received tattoos when she was young and is a fan of Chinese characters. Raquel stated, “I like them and I think they look beautiful. I went to the Asian museum and I picked out the one’s that I liked out.” However, she admits, “I am never getting another tattoo again… I was younger and that was cool then, but actually I like the beauty of just clean skin.”

In a recent article published by ESPN it was noted that the International Olympic Committee was considering Women Boxers to wear SKIRTS in the Olympic Games. Women involved in the sport have sounded off on the concept and Raquel is not without opinion on this controversy. She stated, “As a female boxer I believe we should be able to wear what we want to wear. I don’t believe that we should be subject to skirts just because we are females – because we are the same, just as the guys. Some people say this is “to distinguish the two”, but there is no need to distinguish because I am only going to be fighting girls – I will not be fighting a guy. So, it’s not like I need to put on a skirt to distinguish me from the guys. I feel like – let us wear what we feel comfortable wearing. Don’t put us in a box – it’s almost like sexism – it’s like, oh, because I am a female I have to wear skirts. Some women don’t wear skirts in their real life – so why within my sport would I have to wear a skirt to define who I am? I don’t look like a guy when I take my head gear off. I might look a little tough with nice arms that are pretty strong, but don’t make it seem like there is something soft and fu-fu or something girly about boxing. We slang leather just like the guys so let us wear whatever we are comfortable with wearing.

Don’t single us out – no other sport does that. The girls who play basketball don’t wear skirts. The girls who play softball – they don’t wear skirts. So it really doesn’t make sense to me that since we are in a male dominated sport that we have to wear something that makes us look feminine – no! We are still women and it doesn’t make us look like a guy or any more rough. We are ladies, but we actually bring it just like the guys and sometimes better.”

Raquel is well on her way and her background, commitment to boxing, steadfastness in belief armed with natural Beauty – inside and out – will provide much opportunity for her story to be chronicled and established in history.

She is a boxer because she is good at it. She is a boxer because she is answering to the call of God on her life. She is a boxer that loves the rawness of the sport and how un-pretty it is. She remarks, “I love the fact that it is rough and its tough and I can still go down and throw on my heels and look just as good as anyone else. But, at the end of the day I am one of those chicks you better not mess with.”

Stay tuned for more in the near future regarding Raquel Miller; boxer – who just happens to be blessed to be female. As we stand with her in her quest we say, Go for the GOLD! And when the National Anthem is playing as you bow your head to receive your long awaited treasure – lift your hands before all of history and declare the God of your salvation.

Wyclef Jean Yele Haiti Charity Took in Millions but Only Spent a Third on Earthquake Relief Efforts

Wyclef Jean Yele Haiti charity took in millions but only spent $5.1 million on earthquake relief, with millions paid in questionable contracts, including organization run by wife’s brother, Warnel Pierre.

Wyclef Jean is in the news again and we may see him crying again in another news conference. Wyclef Jean Yele Haiti charity is in the spotlight again over how they spent the $16 million it collected in 2010, with less than a third going to emergency efforts in the earthquake-ravished country. Jean’s charity doled out millions in questionable contracts, including $1 million to a Florida firm that didn’t exist. Here’s a prime example of why people are reluctant to dole out their hard-earned money to these fly-by night charities that pop-up.

Jean’s charity, which he founded in 2005 with his cousin Jerry Duplessis, was already troubled when the earthquake struck Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. The Post reported in 2008 that it had never filed a required tax form detailing its spending with the IRS.

For all the desperation, records show that Yele Haiti spent just $5.1 million for emergency relief efforts, including food and water delivery to makeshift survivor camps, according to a review of the charity’s 2010 tax filings, which were obtained by The Post. Yele Haiti paid five contractors to accomplish its goals, including P&A Construction — which received $353,983 and is run by Warnel Pierre, the brother of Jean’s wife, Claudinette.

A purported Miami business called Amisphere Farm Labor Inc. received a whopping $1,008,000 as a “food distributor.” No trace of the company could be found last week in the Sunshine State, but records show the company’s head, Amsterly Pierre, bought three properties in Florida last year, including a condo in an upscale waterfront community. Source

This is a prime example of why we only give to reputable and well-established charities. Even then, you have to exercise some caution and do your research on how they allocate the funds they collect. Wyclef Jean left the board in 2010, but the damage was already done. After he held a tearful press conference last January, you would think that he would surround himself with the right people and run his charity with the highest levels of transparency. Just think if the people of Haiti had elected him their president, financial mismanagement would rule the day under his administration. It is a sad commentary that Haiti continues to be plundered, by its own people. Shameful. The bottom line is that Wyclef Jean needs to get his act together and not say he’s being singled out because he’s black. No, you’re being singled out because you are all engaging in shady accounting and slighting the people of the country you claim to love so much.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Says America Will Never be “Race Blind”

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appears on Thanksgiving edition of “Face the Nation,” says U.S. will never be “race blind” and race and poverty issues are still a “terrible witch’s brew.”

Condoleezza Rice says U.S. will never be "race blind." (Wikipedia)

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says U.S. will “never be race blind,” though GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain would have you believe otherwise. Ms. Rice, who appeared on the Thanksgiving edition of “Face the Nation,” said “America has come a long way in confronting racial inequality, but it will never be “race blind” and race and poverty issues are still a “terrible witch’s brew.” She said growing in Birmingham, Ala., during the height of the civil rights unrest “shaped me fundamentally.” You would never hear that from the lips of Herman Cain.

“My family had to persevere under those circumstances to educate all of us, and to insist that we might not be able to control our circumstances but we could control our response,” Rice told CBS’ Bob Schieffer. Since those days, Rice argued, a lot of things have changed. “We have a black president. We’ve had two black secretaries of state. We have black CEOs. Obviously African Americans are pushing way into territories that, probably, my grandparents would never have thought possible,” she said. Source

Isn’t it amazing that Condoleezza Rice and Herman Cain both grew up in the Deep South during the struggle for racial equality and they both have a different recollection of the series of events that unfolded. Um, Herman Cain chose to sit in the back of the bus comfortably playing the role of a house rat, while Condoleezza Rice’s family didn’t run from the struggle but taught her how to overcome and persevere.
