ASU Marine Biologist Names Crustacean Blood Feeder, Gnathia Marleyi After Bob Marley (National Science Foundation)

Reggae legend Bob Marley joins an elite club, including Barack Obama, who have a biological species named in their honor — the Gnathia marleyi — a small parasitic crustacean blood feeder that infests fish in Caribbean coral reefs.

The species was named by Paul Sikkel, a marine biologist at Arkansas State University, who said, “I named this species, which is truly a natural wonder, after Marley because of my respect and admiration for Marley’s music.”

The young Gnathia marleyi hide among coral rubble, sea sponges, launching surprise attacks on fish, which they then infest, eating enough to fuel their growth to adulthood, Reuters reports.

SHOCK: WLS, a Chicago radio station, reported that Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) may have tried to commit suicide, citing “two high-ranking people on the Democratic side of the aisle, in both fundraising and in the legislative branch,” Politico reports. Rev. Jesse Jackson pushed back, refuting the claims, saying, “he’s with his doctor and getting treatment, regaining his strength.” If he’s sick, why all the mystery?

Liberal Group: Mitt Romney So White He Makes “Wonder Bread Look Like Pumpernickel”

Mitt Romney and Wonder breadIs GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney too white for blacks? Um, the Drudge Report is going nuts over a Washington Examiner article that claims a liberal group, headed by former Media Matters for America president Eric Burns, former AOL chief creative officer and co-founder of theknot.com and former NY times journalist Andrew Zipern are pushing a campaign saying why blacks don’t like Romney, who they claim is so white he makes “Wonder Bread look like pumpernickel.” This is ahead of Mitt Romney’s Wednesday address to the NAACP. I’m so glad I grabbed a screen shot from the Drudge Report, because all reference to the so-called smear is gone from the site.

I’m shaking my head at this one. I don’t like Mitt Romney because he’s a humongous flip-flopper who doesn’t seem to have a plan for what ails this country and one who can’t be trusted because he would rather invest a big chunk of his wealth in off-shore bank accounts. I also don’t like him because he doesn’t seem to be at ease with people of less financial means. Even though George W. Bush was wealthy, he was very comfortable around blacks, as evidenced from his trips to Africa during his presidency. Mitt Romney has ONE black person on his campaign staff. The group claims it’s satire. You be the judge:

Spike Lee Working on Documentary About Michael Jackson’s “Bad” Album

Spike Lee is working on the documentary for Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album. Lee calls it a “treasure chest of findings,” the Associated Press reports.

“We have footage in this documentary that no one’s ever seen, stuff that Michael shot himself, behind-the-scenes stuff,” he said in an interview Monday. “We had complete access to the vaults ofMichael Jackson. … He wrote 60 demos for the ‘Bad’ record. Only 11 made it. So we got to hear a lot of that stuff, too, so it was just a great experience.” He added: “You don’t have to be a Michael Jackson-head to enjoy this.”

“We really divided it into two things: Artists today who were influenced by Michael, and then people who worked side by side — musicians, songwriters, technicians, engineers, people at the label, who were all committed to Michael, to the follow-up to the biggest record of all time, which still is ‘Thriller.’” Source

Spike Lee also plans an annual birthday tribute to Jackson in Brooklyn, New York, on Aug. 25.

Mitt Romney: “I Didn’t Even Know About That Bermuda Company”

Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts,...

Mitt Romney: “I Didn’t Even Know About That Bermuda Company” (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Now Mitt Romney says he didn’t know that he has offshore funds in a Bermuda company.  Sounds like everything else in his campaign and where he stands on the issues — “I didn’t know.” He disavowed any responsibility for his investments in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, saying his personal finances are part of a “blind trust” that’s out of his control. Really? This all reminds me of singer Shaggy’s song, “It Wasn’t Me.” Sorry Mittens, I know you weren’t blindfolded when you signed your tax returns.

“I don’t manage them, I don’t even know where they are,” Romney told Radio Iowa Monday of his investment portfolio. “That trustee follows all U.S. laws, all taxes are paid as appropriate, all of them have been reported to the government. There’s nothing hidden there.” Source

So, let me get this straight, Mitt Romney didn’t know the 12,000 shares he transferred to his wife’s blind trust the day before he was sworn in as governor were in a Bermuda company? How did he know what he was transferring? All the more reason why one has to wonder how qualified he is to run this country, if he can’t remember what he transferred. He has something to hide, hence his reluctance to release more than one year’s worth of tax returns. Mitt Romney is lying. He knows exactly where his money is invested. If he doesn’t he shouldn’t even be running for the presidency because that means he will sign whatever they put in front of him.

Here’s Shaggy’s video to “It Wasn’t Me:”

Russell Wasendorf Sr., Founder of PFGBest, in Critical Condition After Suicide Attempt Over Missing Money

Russell Wasendorf Sr., the founder of PFGBest brokerage firm (Peregrine Financial Group) attempted suicide after it was disclosed that more than $200 million is missing from clients’ accounts. Russell Wasendorf Sr. was found in his car near his company’s Iowa headquarters and is in critical condition at the University of Iowa Hospital, according to media reports. Wasendorf, a former journalist and trader, is reportedly in a coma.

Wasendorf’s suicide attempt came hours before the National Futures Association (NFA) said it had issued an emergency order to in effect freeze PFGBest’s operations after finding that a US bank account the broker said contained $225 million in customer funds actually held only $5 million, the Guardian reports. “It appears that PFG does not have sufficient assets to meet its obligations to its customers,” the NFA said.

An alleged fraud and misappropriation of customer funds by futures merchant Peregrine Financial Group Inc. started more than two years ago, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by federal regulators.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission accused Peregrine Financial and its chief executive, Russell Wasendorf Sr., of fraud, customer funds violations and making false statements. The news comes less than a year after the collapse of MF Global Holdings Ltd. and is raising new questions about government oversight of how futures firms manage customer cash. Still think that these companies don’t need regulation to avoid customers being ripped off? SMH. Of course, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) believes the government should take a wait-and-see attitude, saying it’s “premature to start talking about an indemnity fund or changes to the law,” Reuters reports. Um, why am I not surprised a Republican lawmaker would take this position? Does the near financial collapse on Wall Street ring a bell?

Obama Campaign and Democrats Aim to Swift Boat Mitt Romney Over Offshore Bank Accounts

The Democrats are on a mission to “swift boat” GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, in similar fashion as the Republicans did to John Kerry.  The Obama campaign continues to pound away at Romney’s “secret” investments in a newly released video. There’s nothing wrong with being wealthy, but when you are running for the highest office in the country, then it looks pretty bad that you have stashed away money in a few different countries — Switzerland, Cayman Islands and Bermuda — in tax havens. You are, in essence, skirting the tax laws in your own country.

How can you be trusted to have the best interests of the people on Main Street, in as far as the tax code, at heart? Charlie Rangel once headed the powerful Ways and Means Committee, all the while having tax and ethics issues. Um, you can’t send the fox to guard the hen house.

The Obama campaign video says: “Mitt Romney is defying calls to release more than one year’s worth of tax returns. How long can Romney keep information on his investments in overseas tax havens secret? And why he did it in the first place? Time will tell.”

Some pundits have expressed their opinion on the Democratic attacks and on Romney’s campaign:

Alex Burns: “The Democratic attacks on Romney’s finances are based on circumstantial evidence and basically amount to: where there’s smoke, there’s fire. What’s inconvenient for Romney is that the smoke includes buzzwords like ‘Swiss bank account’ that tend to be problematic for him in focus groups.”

Mark Halperin: “We are at a potentially critical moment in the presidential race over the Democrats’ attempts to make Romney’s Swiss bank account, Cayman Island investment funds, and secret tax returns into what the Republicans’ Swift Boating effort was for John Kerry in 2004.”

Charlie Cook: “If President Obama’s campaign machine can define Mitt Romney before his own campaign even tries, my bet is Obama wins reelection.”

[…]

“Voters’ willingness to hire Romney is being severely damaged, at least in swing states, by the advertising efforts of the Obama campaign and Priorities USA, a pro-Obama super PAC. The ads are devastatingly tough, portraying the former Massachusetts governor as a private-equity version of Gordon Gekko, a heartless corporate barracuda who has made a fortune acquiring and looting companies, laying off workers, and ruining lives and communities.”

The notion that one stashes money away in foreign banks just because one can afford to, doesn’t resonate with people on Main Street. That’s bad for Mitt Romney. As Rick Santorum said on the campaign trail, Mitt Romney is the worst candidate to go up against Barack Obama in November. The Obama campaign is pushing Mitt Romney in a box by defining him as one who skirts the tax code and doesn’t really have a plan to fix what ails this country because he is out of touch with the needs of people on Main Street.
