NY Judge Wants Answers About Rupert Murdoch’s Reaction to Obama Dead Chimp Cartoon in NY Post (NY Post)
NY Post Obama Dead Chimpanzee Cartoon: Federal Magistrate Judge Ronald Ellis has ordered the New York Post’s editor Col Allan to answer questions about how Rupert Murdoch reacted to a cartoon depicting President Obama as a dead chimpanzee. The judge’s request is a part of a lawsuit filed by former Post employee Sandra Guzman, who accused the newspaper and editor Col Allan of racial discrimination and harassment.
Guzman, who is black and Puerto Rican, in November 2009 sued the Post and parent News Corp, which Murdoch runs, saying she had been fired in retaliation for complaints over inappropriate conduct.
She also claimed to be among those who objected to the Feb. 18, 2009 cartoon that depicted a policeman shooting a crazed chimpanzee, a play on an actual Connecticut incident.
The cartoon referred to the recently adopted $787 billion federal economic stimulus and many people saw the chimpanzee as a depiction of Obama. Murdoch later apologized to readers. Source: Reuters
Judge Ellis said that editor Col Allan could not invoke “editorial privilege” and avoid answering questions Guzman poses. It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out in court. Um, while Rupert Murdoch is offering Mitt Romney advice, he has his own mess to clean up — hacking allegations, racial discrimination, etc.
