Lifetime is set to air a new version of playwright Robert Harling’s stage-to-screen dramedy, the all-black cast of Steel Magnolias, this fall, but the cable network is already airing the trailer on its website.
The women at the core of this Southern tale, set in the fictional Louisiana town of Chinquapin, will be played by a stellar cast of black actresses: Queen Latifah as M’Lynn, Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Phylicia Rashad as Clairee, Adepero Oduye as Annelle, and Tony-nominated Condola Rashad, the real-life daughter of Phylicia, as Shelby.
In the 1989 movie, the roles were played by Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah and Julia Roberts, respectively.
