COMMENTARY:  Toby Harnden reports that President Obama “did not take his debate preparation seriously, ignored the advice of senior aides and walked off the stage in Denver believing he had got the better of Mitt Romney.”  Um, really? If that’s true and he thought he had gotten the better of Mitt Romney, then I have to say he must have been on something. That speaks to a certain level of arrogance on his part.

A top Democrat “said that Obama’s inner circle was dismayed at the ‘disaster’ that the first presidential debate had turned out to be and believed that the central problem was that the President was so disdainful of Romney that he didn’t believe he needed to engage with him… The Democrat, who is aligned with the Obama campaign and has been an unofficial adviser on occasions, said that David Axelrod, Obama’s chief strategist, was stunned that the President left the stage feeling that he had won the debate.”

Hey, Mr. President, if you think you won the debate, take a look at the polls, 27 days until the election and people are a little turned off by you, including me:

Sensing a possible Romney presidency, Sesame Workshop issued a statement asking the Obama campaign to take down its latest campaign ad mocking Mitt Romney’s attack on Big Bird:

Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns. We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down. Source

Well, they could take that position because they don’t to be caught in the middle of political wrangling or a possible trademark infringemnt on the Obama campaign’s part. Just like the Parade of Nations Salt Lake City Winter Olympics campaign ad.

Left-Leaning Public Policy Poll Shows Romney Leading Obama 49 to 47 Percent, on Surge from Women Voters

Mitt Romney leading Obama in the latest poll results from left-leaning Public Policy Polling for the Daily Kos. Romney leads Obama 49 percent to 47 percent. That’s all because he bombed during the presidential debate last week. This is the second poll to show a Romney lead. Pew Research Center showed him with a 4-point lead nationally on Monday. The poll also showed Romney got an 18-point swing among female voters. Still, these bounces can dissipate in a matter of hours.

It’s the first time all year Romney has led in the poll, which was conducted on behalf of the liberal Daily Kos website and the Service Employees International Union. Obama led 49-45 percent in the group’s previous poll, conducted before last week’s debate. Source

I must admit, I was very turned off by the earlier version of Mitt Romney we saw, but now I find myself on the fence. If this Mitt Romney we are seeing now is the real person, then I will publicly say, I could very well vote for him on November 6. I believe President Obama would be better for the middle class, but if he has another empty podium performance, he could very well lose the election.

I once considered myself a Democrat, but voted for a Republican, Rudy Giuliani, as mayor in New York City during his first term because I didn’t like Ruth Messenger one bit. Through the years, I have voted on either side of the aisle in a number of elections and I am at another crossroads today. One week ago, I was pretty sure I was going to vote for President Obama, but now I am not so sure. I don’t see that fire in his belly that we saw in 2008.

Here are some more poll numbers:

Colorado: Romney 50%, Obama 46% (American Research Group)

Ohio: Romney 48%, Obama 47% (American Research Group)

Pennsylvania: Obama 43%, Romney 40% (Siena)

National Polls:

Obama 48%, Romney 48% (Rasmussen)

Domestic Violence Murders Increasing Nationwide, Up 25 Percent in Dallas, New York City

October is Domestic Violence Awareness  month and the statistics are jarring.  Domestic violence murders are up 25 percent in New York City, Dallas, as well as in many Florida counties, and other parts of the country. A divorce proceeding or initiating the break-up of a relationship can trigger an increase in intensity of the acts of domestic violence. It is very sobering and disconcerting to learn that one in four women  experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

National Coalition Against Domestic Violence statistics:

    • One in four women experience domestic violence in her lifetime;
    • An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year;
    • 85 percent of domestic violence victims are women;
    • African American women are 28% more likely than white women to be victims of domestic violence;
    • In most cases, domestic violence incidents are not reported to the police.

Statistics on Domestic Violence Murders:

  • Violence is the reason stated for one in five divorces.
  • Battered women seek medical attention for domestic violence injuries significantly more often after separation than during cohabitation.
  • About 75% of the visits to emergency rooms by battered women occur after separation.
  • Women who leave their batterers are at 75% greater risk of severe injury or death than those who stay. (Source: National Coalition Against Domestic Violence).

These statistics are alarming, but we cannot lose sight that women are under siege. Not to politicize the matter, but when you have Republicans such as Todd Akin making light of rape, we have a real problem.

Report: Family Rebellion, Lead by Tagg Romney, Shakes Up Romney Campaign for Better

Report: Family Rebellion, Lead by Tagg Romney, Shakes Up Romney Campaign for Better (Photo credit: ABC News)

A “family intervention” just before the first presidential debate, may have been a lifeline to Mitt Romney’s campaign because it drastically changed things up dramatically inside his campaign, which we are seeing in the polls.

Politico:  “The family pushed for a new message, putting an emphasis on a softer and more moderate image for the GOP nominee — a ‘let Mitt be Mitt’ approach they believed more accurately reflected the looser, generous and more approachable man they knew. Chief strategist Stuart Stevens — whom the family held responsible for allowing Romney’s personal side to be obscured by an anti-Obama economic message — has seen his once wide-ranging portfolio ‘fenced in’ to mainly the debates, and the television advertising that is his primary expertise, according to campaign officials. Tagg Romney, channeling his mother’s wishes, is taking a much more active role in how the campaign is run.”

“The family rebellion, long building despite Mitt Romney’s initial reluctance to change, reached a climax in September, amid mounting evidence that the status quo was doomed to failure. The course correction came after internal polls showed him losing nearly every swing state and a loud chorus of second-guessing among prominent conservatives.”

Will the media paint Ann Romney as the new Nancy Reagan or the woman who wants to see her husband win? Michelle Obama wasn’t portrayed in a positive light by the right wing press, particularly after her statement about being proud about her country was taken out of context and she was painted as the “angry black woman.”

Obama Campaign Mocks Romney on Big Bird Attack, as “Big Yellow Menace to Our Economy”

A new Obama campaign ad goes after Mitt Romney and his attack on Big Bird. During last week’s presidential debate in Denver, Mitt Romney said, “I’m sorry Jim, I’m gonna stop the subsidy to PBS. I like PBS, I love Big Bird, I actually like you too, but I’m going to stop borrowing money from China to pay for things we don’t need.” This comes as Mitt Romney disses little kids at Nickelodeon TV show, Kids Pick the President. He turned down an invitation. Not only does he hate Big Bird, he hates Nickelodeon too.

It should be noted that the money PBS receives from the government, some in grants for rural areas, is around $445 million.  Eliminating the funding wouldn’t affect the national debt one iota, since it amounts to one one-hundredth of one percent, Funny how Romney has no problem doling out millions in foreign aid, but willing to kick PBS under a bus.

“One man has the guts to speak his name,” says the narrator, with the ad then flashing to Romney saying “Big Bird” repeatedly — followed by Big Bird cheerfully saying his own name.

“Big, yellow, a menace to our economy. Mitt Romney knows it’s not Wall Street you have to worry about it, it’s Sesame Street,” adds the narrator.

The ad ends with a cute shot of Big Bird in his nest, with his teddy bear, sleeping: “Mitt Romney, taking on our enemies no matter where they nest.” Source

It’s amazing Obama let this one go during the debate. He should have hit back, but then again, he had an empty-podium night. SMH.
