“Taken 2” Retains No. 1 Spot at Weekend Box Office with $22.5M, Followed by Ben Affleck’s “Argo” with $20M

Ben Affleck’sArgo” didn’t lead by North American weekend box office, instead came in second place to Liam Neeson’s action thriller “Taken 2” which pulled in $22.5 million, down 54.4 percent from its opening weekend, followed by Summit Entertainment’s “Sinister” in third place with $18.3 million, followed by Sony’s “Hotel Transylvania” in fourth place with $17.3 million and a total haul of $102.2 million. Sony Pictures also took the fifth place with “Here Comes the Boom” with $12 million.

Taken 2” is a runaway hit, grossing $86.8 million domestically and $132.8 million internationally for a worldwide total of $220 million, shy of the $226.8 million earned by the Taken 1 in its entire run. Warner Bros’ “Argo,” which Ben Affleck also directed, is a political thriller about the rescue of six Americans during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. “Argo” received a A+ from CinemaScore. The political thriller, which also stars John Goodman, Bryan Cranston and Alan Arkin, chronicles how the Americans were able to escape Iran after the CIA and Tony Mendez staged a fake movie production as a cover.
