Ophadell Williams Acquitted on All Felony Charges in Fatal New York Bus Crash

Ophadell Williams, a bus driver accused of being so tired that he caused a crash that killed 15 passengers, got a Christmas present of a lifetime. He was found not guilty on all felony charges by a jury on Friday, essentially underscoring the difficulty in prosecuting so-called drowsy driving cases, the New York Times reports.

The driver, Ophadell Williams, was returning to Chinatown from an overnight trip to the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut in March 2011 when his bus struck a guardrail on Interstate 95 near the Bronx-Westchester border, flipped over, and smashed into a signpost with enough force to shear off part of the roof. The crash — one of the deadliest in the city’s history — also injured many other passengers, including one man whose arms were torn off as he tried to shield his face.

After nearly two weeks of deliberations, the jury in State Supreme Court in the Bronx acquitted Mr. Williams of 53 of 54 charges, the most serious of which were criminally negligent homicide and manslaughter. He was found guilty on a single charge of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor.

Mr. Williams, 41, showed visible relief as the verdict was being announced in the courtroom, at times wiping his eyes and putting his face in his hands. He has been in prison since September 2011 after he was unable to post a $250,000 bail — including Thursday night after the jury reached a verdict but the judge overseeing the case said there was no time to announce it. City of Detroit Could be Heading for Managed Bankruptcy

The city of Detroit could be heading for bankruptcy, a sad turn of events in its struggle to gain financial footing, as the city has been gripped by record unemployment and foreclosure rates:

Detroit News:  Even as the state Treasury prepares to begin another financial review of Detroit’s books, a plan is being solidified in the governor’s office that would guide Michigan’s largest city through what is being called a managed bankruptcy.

The working concept, still evolving, assumes that the state’s financial review would find severe financial distress in Detroit, that Mayor Dave Bing and City Council would be unable to push through overdue restructuring, and that the process would culminate in appointment of an emergency financial manager under Public Act 72.

The case would be filed under Chapter 9 of the federal bankruptcy code, according to two ranking sources familiar with the situation, following efforts to reach prenegotiated settlements with as many key creditors — unions, vendors and pension funds among them — as possible before any filing.

Jacintha Saldanha, Nurse who Took Prank Call about Duchess of Cambridge, Found Dead

SHOCK:  The nurse who took the prank call about Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, was found dead of a suspected suicide. Jacintha Saldanha is believed to have committed suicide after she took a prank call from two Australian DJs asking about the pregnant Duchess.

The King Edward VII Hospital described her as an “excellent nurse” who was “well respected and popular” with colleagues.

DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian made the prank call from Down Under, impersonating Prince Charles and the Queen to get information about Kate’s condition.

The duo — whose station is notorious for courting controversy — were amazed when their dodgy uppercrust British accents got them put through to Kate’s ward. Source

It is a shame that Jacintha Saldanha felt she had no other recourse but to commit suicide. Mel Greig and Michael Christian should be suspend, at the minimum, for the mess they caused. Jacintha Saldanha is survived by her partner,  Benedict Barboza and her two sons. The DJs have been taken off the air until further notice.
