Black Elgin Police Officer Phillip Brown Alleges Racial Discrimination Against Two White Officers in Federal Lawsuit

Officer Phillip Brown, a 16-year veteran of the Elgin Police Department, sued the city and police officers Sean Rafferty and James R. Barnes, in federal court, alleging racism in the police department, where “white officers support the Ku Klux Klan, call black children chitterlings and gang members hood n*ggers.”

Phillipp Brown sued the city of Elgin and its police Officers Sean Rafferty and James R. Barnes in Federal Court.  Rafferty is his supervisor and Barnes is an internal affairs investigator, according to the complaint.

On or about 2000, plaintiff and several other officers from EPD attended a football game in Indianapolis. While in that vicinity, defendant Rafferty, who served in the gang unit with plaintiff, had his picture taken with fellow police officer Tom Wolek in front of a Ku Klux Klan monument. Rafferty and Wolek both posed in the picture showing their hands in the sign of a ‘K,’ while stating, ‘If you are looking for the Klan, we’re right here.’ “Upon returning to the EPD after that trip, the photo of defendant Rafferty and Wolek in front of the KKK monument was widely disseminated in and around the EPD.

“On June 29, 2011, Caucasian Officer Mark Hornsby approached plaintiff and asked him how his ‘chitterling,’ referring to plaintiff’s infant son, was,” the complaint states. “Plaintiff reported this comment by Hornsby which plaintiff found to be racially insensitive to Barnes, as he had been instructed to do. Source

Seven Killed, Including One Suicide, During South African Traffic Police Fitness Test

Seven people, including Lenny Nxumalo, died after more than 15,000 took part in a South African traffic police fitness test held in 91.5F heat in order to win one of just 90 jobs with South African traffic police.

Telegraph:  The massive crowd of unemployed jobseekers, mostly aged between 18-20, took part in the test, held in a football stadium, after they each received text messages informing them they had been “shortlisted” for the coveted spots in the KwaZulu Natal regional traffic police department.

As part of the test, they were told they needed to complete 4km (2.4 mile) run within half an hour to meet the force’s minimum fitness level requirement.

But by the time they started running late last Thursday afternoon, temperatures inside Pietermaritzburg’s Harry Gwala stadium had climbed to 91.5F.

With many neither eating or drinking all day, and limited access to drinking water, six people were died after collapsing from heat exhaustion and dehydration during the run, of which six died. A seventh man reportedly killed himself when he learned he had not finished the race in time.

Lillian Miles Lewis, Wife of Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), Dies at Age 73

Lillian Miles Lewis, John Lewis' wife dies in Atlanta

Lillian Miles Lewis, Wife of Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), Dies at Age 73

Our deepest condolences go out to Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), whose wife of 44 years, Lillian Miles Lewis,  died Monday morning, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The couple have one son, John Miles.

Lewis, whose father owned a small contracting business, attended Los Angeles High School with the late Johnny Cochran, received an undergraduate degree in English from California State College (now California State University) at Los Angeles, and a master’s degree in library science at the University of Southern California.

It was after taking a job as a librarian at Atlanta University (the predecessor, with Clark College, of today’s Clark Atlanta University) that she met her husband at a 1967 New Year’s Eve party at the home of television personality and civil rights activist Xernona Clayton. Clayton and another movement veteran, Dr. Bernard LaFayette, played matchmaker.

The two began a courtship, often double-dating with Julian and Alice Bond, movement friends who would become bitter rivals when Bond and Lewis opposed each other in a 1986 congressional race. The Lewises were married in 1968.

15-Year-Old Jubrille Jordan Shot and Killed Near BART Station in Oakland, No Suspects in Custody

OAKLAND GUN VIOLENCE: Jubrille Jordan, 15, was shot and killed Sunday afternoon while walking with an unidentified 14 year old boy to a BART station in Oakland, Calif. The teen and her friend were reportedly heading to the Bayfair Mall in San Leandro.

Jubrille aspired to be a teacher and loved to dance, Drummer said, and her hobbies were shopping and drawing. Jubrille’s death follows on the heels of another family tragedy. Her father, Harry Jordan, died two weeks ago from stomach cancer, Drummer said.

Latasha Bailey, 28, who lives in the housing complex, said she ran outside Sunday night, saw the girl on the ground and the girl’s friend performing CPR. “But she was already gone,” Bailey said Sunday night as she stood behind yellow police tape at the scene. Officers were called around 3:40 p.m. Source

The other teen walking with Jubrille Jordan was also shot, but his injuries were non-life threatening.

BREAKING NEWS:  Hillary Clinton has a blood clot lodged between her brain and skull. The blood clot is located behind her right ear. Hillary Clinton reportedly suffered no stroke or neurological damage

The clot is located in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. Clinton’s doctors say that to help dissolve the clot, they are treating her with blood thinners. They say she will be released once the medication dose has been established. Source

Here’s more from the NY Daily News:

“In the course of a routine follow-up MRI on Sunday, the scan revealed that a right transverse sinus venous thrombosis had formed,” said Dr. Lisa Bardack and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi in a statement released by the State Department. “This is a clot in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage.”

The statement went on to say that her medical team is using blood thinners to dissolve the clot and that she is making “excellent progress.” They also expressed confidence she will make a “full recovery.”

“She is in good spirits, engaging with her doctors, her family, and her staff,” the statement said.

This news comes as a new Gallup poll gives her the title of the “most admired woman” in the world, with 21 percent selecting her. First Lady Michelle Obama came in a distant second at five percent, followed by Oprah Winfrey at four percent and Condoleezza Rice with three percent.

We wish Mrs. Clinton a speedy recovery. I hope all those right wing haters who claim she was evading testimony before Congress on the Benghazi consulate attack should be ashamed of themselves.

Fox News “Commentator” Sean Hannity One of the Biggest Losers of 2012, Lost Half Audience After Obama Win

Fox News’ host Sean Hannity is being called one of the biggest losers of 2012 and it’s with good reason. The NY Daily News reports that he has lost one-half of his audience after President Obama won reelection. Yeah, that’s because he was dead wrong in many of his predictions about the outcome of the election and about President Obama. Add Dick Morris to the mix and you’ll see why he deserves to lose his viewers. Sean Hannity has ZERO credibility. This comes as he tried to make hay of Hillary Clinton’s medical problems, saying he wanted to see the medical report about her concussion.

NY Daily News:  According to Nielsen numbers, Hannity lost around half of his audience in the weeks after the election, while his Fox News colleague Bill O’Reilly — who steadfastly refuses to identify himself politically as a conservative — retained around 70% of his audience.

So what happened to Hannity?

The going wisdom is that viewers who basked in his preelection anti-Obama rhetoric tuned him out when they were stunned to wake up on Nov. 7 and discover that the President had won a second term — a scenario that Hannity had all but promised could never happen.

Adding insult to injury, two of Hannity’s rivals on MSNBC, Ed Schultz and Rachel Maddow, held onto huge chunks of their audiences, while at CNN, far less politically polarizing host Anderson Cooper lost almost none of his viewers postelection.

It got even worse for Hannity in the “money demo” of viewers 25-54, who are prized by advertisers.

With this group, Hannity held onto less than half his preelection audience. O’Reilly, on the other hand, kept almost 70%.

And through the early part of December, Maddow actually beat Hannity in the coveted group — a shocking turn, because until the election, Hannity was unassailable by any of his rivals, at least in terms of ratings.

Sean Hannity tried to resurrect Rev. Jeremiah Wright, played up a speech by then-candidate Barack Obama at Hampton University, and try to strike a low blow in denigrating and discrediting President Obama, but it all backfired with a resounding defeat of Mitt Romney in the elections.

NBC News Reporter Robert Bazell Raises Questions Hillary Clinton Blood Clot May Not Be Related to Concussion

Despite an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton releasing a statement saying she is hospitalized due to a blood clot stemming from a concussion, the questions continue to swirl. Why hasn’t a statement been released by the New York Presbyterian Hospital?

The top science reporter for NBC News raised questions Monday about Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s hospitalization, raising the possibility the blood clot causing isn’t linked to an earlier concussion.“It’s not exactly clear what is happening with Secretary Clinton’s health,” NBC News chief science and health correspondent Robert Bazell said.

“All we have is a statement from her office. The hospital isn’t saying anything and the statement from her [office] says that she had this blood clot that stemmed from the concussion and she’s being treated with blood-thinning drugs,” Bazell continued. “The problem is that usually when blood clots come from concussions, they can’t be treated with blood [thinners.] So either it’s not really related to the concussion and she’s got a blood clot in her leg or something, or there’s something else going on that we’re not being told. And right now, we’re just sort of seeking that clarification and hoping for the best as she’s being observed.” Source: Politico
