Oprah Winfrey Lands Exclusive Interview with Disgraced Cyclist Lance Armstrong

Oprah Winfrey is set to interview disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong, who was recently stripped of his Tour de France titles. Word on the street is that he has decided to come clean and ask for forgiveness. The show will air January 17 at 9 p.m. EST on OWN. It will be interesting to see if Oprah Winfrey will just let him off the hook, since he made life hard for anyone who dared to admit he was doping back in the day. Lance Armstrong’s performance on Oprah, crying and all, will either be an Oscar-award caliber performance or what’s left of a deeply damaged man.

Rebeika Powell, Kayetie Melchor, Misty Nunley & Julie Jackson Named as Victims in Tulsa Shooting

TULSA SHOOTING:  Tulsa police have identified the four women found shot to death in an apartment in the Fairmont Terrace Apartments as Rebeika Powell, 23; Kayetie Melchor, 23; Misty Nunley, 33 and Julie Jackson, 55. A three year old boy was found unharmed inside the apartment. He may have seen his mother killed.

Then-Senate Candidate Chuck Hagel Opposed Abortion Even in Cases of Rape

Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel just fell out of favor with women, particularly those who support abortion rights. Buzzfeed is reporting that as a Senate candidate Chuck Hagel opposed abortion, even in cases of rape. Well, I hope he has evolved, like his evolution on gay rights, after his remarks a few years ago that James Hormel, a nominee for an ambassadorship was  ”aggressively gay.”

Buzzfeed:  But as a Senator, Hagel repeatedly voted against amendments to allow servicewomen to pay for abortion services at military hospitals out of their own pockets.

According past campaign literature, he also opposed abortion in cases of rape and incest because those cases are “rare.”

When he announced his candidacy for Senate, Hagel said that he opposed abortion except to protect the life of the mother and in cases of rape and incest. Hagel decided he didn’t believe that exclusion for rape were necessary after studying the issue near the end of his campaign.

“I am pro-life with one exception — the life of the mother. I oppose taxpayer funded
abortions. We must promote adoption and support the strengthening of American families. I will vote with and support the pro-life movement,” Hagel said in a piece of 1996 campaign literature, according to the Omaha World Herald.

His argument that pregnancy from rape is very rare is about as crazy as Richard Mourdock saying pregnancy from rape was a gift from God, Todd Akin’s legitimate rape comment and Sen. Ron Paul’s honest rape comment. I don’t understand why Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham and others have a problem with Chuck Hagel. After all, he’s as right-wing as they come.

President Obama Criticized for Failure to Nominate Women to Key Cabinet Positions

President Obama, who made women’s issues a key tenet of his reelection campaign, seems to be fading fast on that front in his second term as he nominates various people to serve in his cabinet.

So far, he has only appointed men to serve in three of his most prominent national security positions — Sen. John Kerry for Secretary of State to replace Hillary Clinton; Chuck Hagel for Defense Secretary; and counterterrorism advisor John O. Brennan to head the CIA. Does he need to borrow one of Mitt Romney’s binders full of women? Blacks and Hispanics are also missing from his inner group. This is striking considering he was elected by majority support from women, black and Hispanic voters.

The moves have disappointed some supporters who said they fear, with Clinton’s departure, a paucity of females among Obama’s top advisers, particularly in the traditionally male-dominated field of defense and security.

[..]

The pattern is particularly striking for a president who was elected with majority support from women and racial minorities and focused heavily during his reelection campaign on women’s health concerns and equal pay in the workplace. Obama won 55 percent of the female vote to Republican rival Mitt Romney’s 44 percent.

Obama is committed to “finding the very best people for each job,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday, when asked about the lack of women among the second-term appointments. “And that’s what he’s done today, and that’s what he’ll continue to do.” Source

I guess like Patti Labelle, Diana Ross just a touch of diva-ism, after she and her daughter allegedly caused a scene at La Scala restaurant for lunch last Thursday in Beverly Hills. The New York Post reports, upon arriving at the Italian restaurant Diana Ross was told she would have to wait to be seated until her daughter arrived. She reportedly refused and walked to a booth and sat down. Ruh Ruh!

She was allegedly told by management of their seating policy that incomplete parties will not be seated unless a reservation has been made and was also told if “she cut the line and sat before her daughter arrived, she would not be served.” When her daughter did arrive, the pair allegedly caused a scene and then stormed out.

According to the New York Post, owner, Gigi Leon said:  “I’m sorry that Miss Ross had a problem with that and she feels that the rules didn’t apply to her. Our policy is that we don’t sit incomplete parties. If people jump the line, our policy is we don’t serve them, and she was told that. We treat everyone the same whether you’re famous or not. We love having her as a customer. We’d be happy to have her back.”

Tavis Smiley Slams “Django Unchained” Calls it a “Spoof About Slavery”

N-Word Used 109 Times in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” Starring Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington

Tavis Smiley slams “Django Unchained,” calls it a “spoof about slavery.” Is anyone surprised that he joins Spike Lee in panning the controversial movie? Tavis Smiley told the Daily Beast he refuses to see the movie and won’t pay to see it, but has read the screenplay.

During the interview with the Daily Beast, he called out Quentin Tarantino for his “arrogance” and slammed his criticism of the legendary television miniseries, “Roots.” Tarantino said of Roots in a previous interview with the Daily Beast, “When you look at Roots, nothing about it rings true in the storytelling, and none of the performances ring true for me either.”He added, “It didn’t move me because it claimed to be something it wasn’t.” I suppose “Django Unchained” is supposed to move us, but I, too, refuse to watch this mockery of slavery.

More on Tavis Smiley’s comments:  ”I’m troubled that Hollywood won’t get serious about making an authentic film about the holocaust of slavery but they will greenlight a spoof about slavery, and it’s as if this spoof about slavery somehow makes slavery a bit easier to swallow. The suffering of black people is not reducible to revenge and retribution. The black tradition has taught the nation what it means to love. Put it another way: black people have learned to love America in spite of, not because of, so if the justification for the film in the end is, as Jamie Foxx’s Django says, “What, kill white people and get paid for it? What’s wrong with that?” well again, black suffering is not reducible to revenge and retribution.”

So, let me get this straight — when the black guy, Alex Haley, tells his version of slavery in “Roots,” it’s not authentic, but when the white guy, Quentin Tarantino, does in “Django Unchained,” it’s authentic? Wow, that took a great deal of hubris on Quentin Tarantino’s part to make such an assertion.

President Obama Putting Republicans on Blast with “In Your Face” Second Term

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is right, President Obama stuck it to Republicans with his nomination of Chuck Hagel as the next Defense Secretary. Right in the eyes. You see, Chuck Hagel was a staunch critic of the George W. Bush foreign policy, specifically on the war in Iraq, so, this should be a win-win for President Obama as there is a real possibility it will resurrect the Bush years. The same years the Republicans gave him a blank check to do whatever he wanted.

Frank Wilkinson says the nomination of former Sen. Chuck Hagel as defense secretary “represents both an affront to Republicans, who have never honestly reckoned with the disasters of George W. Bush’s foreign policy, and to Democrats, who have spent decades crafting foreign policy designed in part to avoid inciting aggression not from abroad, but from Republicans.”

“Obama may or may not believe Hagel is the best person for the job. But he certainly is mindful of the challenge he has just laid down. Unless opponents can restrict the debate on Hagel to his views — real or imagined — on Israel, they risk litigating the disastrous policies that Hagel rejected and his most vociferous critics embraced.”

“An oddly similar battle awaits on the debt ceiling. Obama says that, unlike 2011, he will not negotiate on the debt ceiling. To hold that line, he will have to explain — repeatedly — that spending is initiated in the House and passed by Congress. In other words, the battle presents an opportunity to stick Republicans with their share of blame for the deficit, a reckoning they have evaded as assiduously as the one on Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Hey Sarah Palin, remember when your cojones comment about President Obama, um, I think you are about to see them in his second term.

OBAMA SECOND INAUGURATION:  Myrlie Evers-Williams, widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, will deliver the invocation at President Obama’s public swearing in January 21, 2013, the Washington Post reports. It is believed that it is the first time a woman and a layperson, rather than a clergy member has been chosen for such a task. It is also a very fitting choice, since the President’s inauguration coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. It is also fitting because this year marks the 50th anniversary of the murder of Medgar Evers.

The benediction will be given by conservative evangelical pastor Louie Giglio, founder of the student-focused Passion Conferences. Louie Giglio, whose conferences draw thousands of young evangelicals, was chosen in part for his work in raising awareness about modern-day slavery and human trafficking.

Separately, People magazine reports Beyoncé will lead the performances at President Obama’s inauguration on January 21, where she will sing the National Anthem. Also on tap to perform are Kelly Clarkson and James Taylor. Clarkson will song “My Country Tis of Thee,” while Taylor will sing “America the Beautiful.” President Barack Obama will be sworn in to his second term to the tune of Beyonce.

Richard Blanco, will be become the youngest Inaugural poet at age 44 and the first Hispanic and gay poet to participate in a presidential inauguration as a poet, the New York Times reports.
