House Republicans showing just how mean-spirited they can be. Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) threatened to file articles of impeachment against President Obama if he uses executive order to try to reduce gun violence. This is after two mothers spoke at a press conference about their loss as a result of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre and were emphatic in their position that something must be done to curb gun violence and have formed a new initiative, The Sandy Hook Promise, to that end.

“The White House’s recent announcement they will use executive orders and executive actions to infringe on our constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms is an unconstitutional and unconscionable attack on the very founding principles of this republic,” Stockman said in a statement. “I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment.” Source:  Talking Points Memo

Is this idiot for real? I wonder if he would take the same position if one of his kids or even a relative was gunned down as those 2o kids and six adults in Newtown. For the 2012 election cycle, the National Rifle Association doled out $719,596 to federal candidates, according to Open Secrets. It’s interesting to note Steve Stockman “sponsored a bill eliminating background checks, waiting periods, and registration for firearms.” He was endorsed by Gun Owners of America, the National Rifle Association and the Texas Rifle Association. Um, guess who’s in the NRA’s back pocket? There’s more about Steve Stockman on his website — he “sponsored a constitutional amendment to prevent citizenship and benefits to anchor babies of illegal aliens.” He also ”sponsored a bill declaring English the official language of the United States.”

Pew: Majority of Americans Favor Making Private Gun Sales, Sales at Gun Shows, Subject to Background Checks

A recent Pew Research study found that 85 percent of Americans favor making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks, with similar support from Republicans, Democrats and independents. About 80 percent support laws to prevent mentally ill people from purchasing guns, with broad support across party lines, according to Pew. Other proposals are as contentious as the gun control debate:

But this bipartisan consensus breaks down when it comes to other proposals. Two-thirds of Americans (67%) favor creating a federal database to track gun sales, but there is a wide partisan divide between Democrats (84%) and Republicans (49%). A smaller majority of the public (55%) favors a ban on assault-style weapons; Democrats (69%) also are far more likely than Republicans (44%) to support this. Similar partisan divides exist when it comes to banning high-capacity ammunition clips or the sale of ammunition online. Source

Jenny Sanford Decides Not to Run Against Ex-Husband for Congress, Says Family Comes First

Jenny Sanford, South Carolina’s former first lady, said she will not run for Congress. News swirled last week that should would run against her ex-husband, Mark Sanford, for the Congressional seat vacated by Tim Scott, who was appointed by Gov. Haley to fill Sen. Jim DeMint’s seat. Jenny Sanford, who has four sons with ex-governor Sanford, said her family comes first.

“I think my job as mom right now is much more important, much more rewarding and much more productive,” Sanford said, according to the Associated Press. “The idea of killing myself to run for a seat for the privilege of serving in a dysfunctional body under John Boehner when I have an eighth-grader at home just really doesn’t make sense to me.”

Sanford was on South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s short list of possible replacements for Republican Jim DeMint in the Senate. Haley appointed congressman Tim Scott, which created the House vacancy in the 1st Congressional District — a seat once held by Mark Sanford. Source

Mark Sanford previously held the Congressional seat. It would have been interesting to see Jenny Sanford go up against her ex-husband. Something tells me she would have been a formidable opponent.

Quentin Tarantino managed to spark controversy at the Golden Globe awards Sunday night by using the word n*gger.  According to Entertainment Weekly, when asked if he was ever moved by the use of the n-word while making “Django Unchained,” Quentin Tarantino responded:

“If somebody is out there actually saying when it comes to the word ni**er,  the fact that I was using it in the movie more than it was being used in the antebellum south in Mississippi, then feel free to make that case. But no one’s actually making that case.  They are saying I should lie, that I should whitewash, that I should massage, and I never do that when it comes to my characters.”

Wait, there’s more. Don Cheadle, who won the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy TV series for Showtime’s “House of Lies,” took the opportunity to use the n-word in jest, saying, “Please no n*gger questions. Black people questions are alright.” If you are going to call out Quentin Tarantino and Don Cheadle, we must also call out all those people who use the word constantly as part of their everyday conversations. I have also been pretty vocal about my disgust for the word, no matter who says, whether they are black, white, Asian or Latino.
