President Obama will nominate B. Todd Jones to the long unfilled position of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Director. He is currently the acting director. This latest move comes as President Obama unveiled the biggest gun control push in decades. President Obama “proposed a new assault weapons ban and mandatory background checks for all gun buyers on Wednesday as he tried to channel national outrage over the Newtown school massacre into the biggest U.S. gun-control push in decades,” Reuters reports.

A brief bio on B. Todd Jones from the ATF:

B. Todd Jones was one of the first five U.S. Attorneys confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 7, 2009. This is the second time Jones has served as United States Attorney – President Clinton appointed him to the position in 1998 and he served in that capacity until January 2001. Jones also has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Minnesota. Prior to becoming U.S. Attorney in 2009, Jones was a partner with a major national law firm in Minneapolis, where his practice focused on criminal defense and complex business litigation. He is also a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Attorney General Eric Holder appointed Jones to serve as Chair of the Attorney General Advisory Committee (AGAC). This body, consisting of 18 United States Attorneys from around the country, is responsible for advising the Attorney General on a broad array of Department of Justice policy issues.

Jones received his Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1983 and his B.A. from Macalester College in 1979. Following admission to the Minnesota bar, he went on active duty in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as an infantry officer with the First Marine Division and subsequently as both a trial defense counsel and prosecutor in a number of courts martial proceedings. In 1989, he left active duty and returned to Minnesota with his family. He was recalled to active duty for Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

President Obama unveiled 23 executive orders to curb gun violence:

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

What part of this proposal is so repugnant to the NRA? In other words, they don’t really care about the lives of anyone taken senselessly through gun violence. The president isn’t taking away anyone’s right to bear arms. Why do you need an assault rifle? To hunt?

Here’s an interesting take from the New York Times:

Wednesday’s announcement reflected a decision by the White House to seize on public outrage to challenge the political power of the National Rifle Association and other forces that have successfully fought new gun laws for decades.

In an emotionally charged event, Mr. Obama stood on a stage with four young children who he said had written to him asking for stronger gun laws. Invoking the memory of a young girl named Grace McDonnell who was killed in the Newtown shootings, the president vowed not to let the momentum for new, tougher gun laws fade.

Matt Drudge: Cold Rain in D.C. ‘Tears from Founders Above’ Over Gun Violence Proposals

GUN CONTROL:  More right wing BS. Matt Drudge, founder of the Drudge Report, tweeted that the cold rain in Washington D.C. was ”tears from Founders above” as President Obama is set to unveil proposals to reduce gun violence. Yeah, they are crying but not because President Obama is trying to save lives.

The National Rifle Association issued a statement saying that their ad calling President Obama an “elitist hypocrite” for sending his daughters to school with Secret Service protection and being skeptical of putting armed guards in schools across the U.S. isn’t about his daughters. Um, really?

NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said in a statement to NBC News:

“Whoever thinks the ad is about President Obama’s daughters are missing the point completely or they’re trying to change the subject,” Arulanandam said in a statement Wednesday. “This ad is about keeping our children safe. And the President said he was skeptical about the NRA proposal to put policemen in all schools in this country. Yet he and his family are beneficiaries of multiple law enforcement officers surrounding them 24 hours a day.”"That’s the real issue,” he continued. “Anything else is an attempted calculated distraction.”

All weapons are coming out, literally, as the National Rifle Association launches a campaign to smear President Obama and anyone one who wants to see gun control measures increased in the wake of the Newtown school shooting that left 20 children and six educators dead last December. The NRA has released a video calling President Obama an “elitist hypocrite” for sending his daughters to school with Secret Service agents and not wanting armed security guards in schools. Wow, here comes that label again from the 2008 presidential campaign. I guess they forgot how little it helped the Republican Party in the general election. The latest move comes as President Obama is set to unveil executive orders to curb gun violence at 11:55 a.m. EST Wednesday.

The ad is a play on the continued questions about President Obama’s legitimacy in the White House. It plays on the animosity some on the right wing fringe have towards the nation’s first black president. This ad is another vile attempt to discredit the president and his motivations for effecting change. Commonsense change. He’s a foreigner, he needs to learn to be an American, he needs more sleep, he’s lazy, he’s an elitist, he got into Harvard on affirmative action, we need to see his college transcripts, we need to see his birth certificates, blah, blah, blah. It never ends with the right wing.

Besides, there’s so much wrong with that argument about his daughters’ Secret Service protection. He didn’t take it upon himself to request that level of protection for Sasha and Malia Obama. I am guessing George W. Bush and all the other Republican presidents were elitist hypocrites for having the same level of protection for their children. The attack on the Obama children has more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese. How many wingnuts have threatened the life of President Obama or any other president for that matter? Can you imagine if these same wingnuts were able to get to their children? To put it simply and bluntly, the ad was meanspirited and vile.

“Are the president’s kids more important than yours?” a narrator says in the 30 second ad. “Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools, when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school.”

The commercial is running on the Sportsman Channel, a cable network focused on outdoors programming such as hunting and fishing. It is also posted on a dedicated web site “Stand and Fight.”

On Wednesday, Obama is set to unveil a new set of proposals that would place very tough restrictions on the ownership and sale of firearms.

In the ad, the narrator only mentions Obama by name, but it also features images of Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NBC anchor David Gregory. Bloomberg is an influential voice in favor of stricter gun laws and has dipped into his personal fortune to help fund a lobby campaign, and Feinstein, a California Democrat, is helping spearhead a congressional effort to enforce tougher gun laws. Source

Wow, how low can this group of hyper-partisan wingnuts go? Besides, who is going to pay for armed guards in all schools across this country and will there be an armed guard by every door leading to the exterior in every school? Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” called the ad “disgusting and out of bounds.” There’s only one way to describe the NRA — a scab that never falls off one’s body.

The NRA’s ad calling Obama an elitist hypocrite:
