CHITIMACHA TRIBAL OFFICER KILLED:  A suspect is in custody after killing an officer from the Chitimacha Reservation in southern Louisiana, and wounding two deputies from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Officer, who are listed in critical condition. All three were responding to a house fire on Flattown Road in Charenton Saturday morning when the suspect started shooting.

Family members tell us their loved one, Matthew Strickland with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, was shot in the incident. He was said to have been shot several times in the face/neck area. He is at a trauma center in New Orleans. His family says he just started last week at the Sheriff’s Office. He previously worked at the jail and served a year with the National Guard in Iraq. Wilbert Thibodeaux was arrested in connection with the shooting. A civilian, 78-year-old Eddie Lyons, was found deceased after the fire was extinguished. He was shot, but it is not clear if he died from the gun shot wound or from the fire. Wilbert Thibodeaux was also injured from a gunshot wound to his upper torso, but he has since been released to police custody from the hospital. Developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
