It is disgrace to learn that all the country of Zimbabwe has left in its government coffers is $217. This is a country that is home to some of the world’s largest platinum and diamond reserves. The country’s finance minister Tendai Biti made the shocking admission at a press conference Tuesday, saying, ”last week when we paid civil servants there was $217 [left] in government coffers. The government finances are in paralysis state at the present moment. We are failing to meet our targets.”
Zimbabwe’s economy went into free-fall at the turn of the millennium, after President Robert Mugabe began seizing white-owned farms.
The move demolished investor confidence in the country, paralysed production, prompted international sanctions and scared off tourists.
After more than a decade — in which the country suffered hyper-inflation of 231 million percent and infrastructure that crumbled as quickly as prices went up — the situation is now more stable.
But public finances remain a mess and local business battles against unstable electricity supplies, lack of liquidity and high labour costs.
I am not sure how the country will dig itself out of this financial hole, but one thing is clear, something must be done quickly. It is time for the people of Zimbabwe to say enough is enough to dictator Robert Mugabe. Their lives haven’t improved one bit under his regime. Biti said, ”We will be approaching the international community.” Well, the Chinese may bail them out, but that will come with a price.

Police have surrounded a rural property where a man who fatally shot school bus driver Charles Albert Poland, Jr., 66, and abducted a six year old passenger, has been holed up. Neighbors identified the property owner as Jimmy Lee Dykes. The Southern Poverty Law Center characterizes Jimmy Lee Dykes as a “survivalist” and has “anti-American” views. He reportedly has ties to the anti-government movement.
The standoff went through the night after a gunman boarded a stopped school bus in the small town of Midland City on Tuesday afternoon. Dale County Sheriff Wally Olsen said the man shot the driver when he refused to let the child off the bus. The shooter took the child away and the driver died of multiple gunshots.
Court records showed Dykes, 65, had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning to face a charge of menacing some neighbors as they drove by his house last month. The neighbors said he yelled and fired shots over damage he claimed their pickup truck did to a make-shift speed bump in the dirt road. Source
The six year old boy being held hostage is autistic and his medication was passed to him on the property.
Here’s more on Jimmy Lee Dykes from the Southern Poverty Law Center:
It was not immediately clear what prompted Dykes to storm the bus, but his motives appear to be related to a menacing charge in December. That month, Dykes pointed a gun at his neighbor, James Edward Davis Dr., who told the Dothan Eagle that Dykes accused him of driving on his yard. Dykes was scheduled to have a bench trial today on the charge, and an unidentified girl who Dykes released from the bus told reporters that Dykes was referring to his upcoming case.
A neighbor of Dykes, who identified himself as Mike Creel, said that Dykes moved on to his property about two years ago and began building an underground bunker, measuring about four by six feet and eight feet deep, right away, according to WSFA-TV. “It’s the craziest thing,” Davis told the Dothan Eagle. “He will be outside in his yard digging at 2:30 in the morning.”
Hatewatch also learned this morning that a “Jimmy Lee Dykes” had a protective order entered against him on behalf of “Melissa Steed, two minor children,” according to a Feb. 9, 2011, listing in the Coweta [Ala.] America.
According to a new ABC News-Washington Post poll, President Obama “has advanced to his highest personal popularity since his first year in office, and Americans who’ve formed an opinion of his second inaugural address last week broadly approve of it.”
The poll found 60% of Americans now express a favorable opinion of Obama overall, up 10 points since last summer, in the heat of the presidential race.
Hadiya Pendleton, Honors Student Who Performed at Obama Inaugural Event, Gunned Down in Chicago Park
SHOCK: Hadiya Pendleton, 15, a honors student at King College Prep, who performed at President Obama’s inaugural events in Washington D.C. last week was fatally shot in a Chicago park.
Hadiya Pendleton had been released from school early Tuesday after an exam and was huddling under a canopy in a South Side park to escape the rain when she was shot in the back. Police said Hadiya Pendleton and another teen collapsed a block away in front of upscale homes on Oakenwalk Avenue.
There were reports that gang members were at the park but that Hadiya Pendleton was not a gang member. It seems that this promising young lady was an ‘unintended target’ when the gunman ran into the park and opened fire at 2:20 p.m., and then sped away in a waiting car, police say.
This is another senseless murder that occurred near President Obama’s Chicago home. You will recall Rashad Pratt was gunned down not far from the home. The Chicago Tribune reports, Hadiya Pendleton was a sophomore at King’s and had attended the inauguration where she performed at inaugural events with the school band and the Majorettes dance team.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Hadiya Pendleton. She was taken too soon. It’s time to take back out streets from thugs and gun violence.
