Excuse me for saying Rush Limbaugh calls the shots in the Republican Party. No, it’s really National Rifle Association president Wayne LaPierre. How else can you explain Rep. Mark Meadows’ (R-NC) bill, H.R. 751, which seeks to allocate $30 million a year in federal grants for placing police officers in schools? Of course, such a plan would satisfy Wayne LaPierre, who suggested after the Newtown school shooting massacre, that armed guards should patrol the hallways of every school in the U.S.

Meadows said, “According to a recent Gallup poll, 53 percent of Americans believe that increasing police presence at schools would be very effective in preventing future tragedies.” “After speaking to local law enforcement, superintendents and principals in my district, I believe this is the best path forward.”

How does Mark Meadows plan to pay for his bill? The suggestion is that the Protect America’s Schools Act would be funded by rescinding unspent funds from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s budget. Um, I guess Mark Meadows may have forgotten NOAA researches the effects of climate change on weather and the environment. Plus NOAA includes the National Weather Service, but who am I kidding? As evidenced from the way they voted to give aid to superstorm Sandy victims, I wouldn’t hold my breath on the Republicans really giving a hoot about climate change, until something weather disaster occurs in their respective states.

Adam Steenkamp Calling on Oscar Pistorius to “Tell the Truth” in Reeva Steenkamp’s Murder

Adam Steenkamp is calling on paralympian Oscar Pistorius to “tell the truth” about the murder of his sister, Reeva Steenkamp. He said his half-sister “was completely unpretentious. Her work had become lively and exciting, and she was travelling all the time.” I fully expect the family of Reeva Steenkamp to start questioning Oscar Pistorius’ version of events. She will be buried Tuesday in a private funeral service.

There is speculation that Reeva Steenkamp’s relationship with South African national team rugby player Francois Hougaard could have played a part in the tragedy. The South African Times cited sources close to the police investigation as saying that social media messages including ones from Francois Hougaard may become part of the prosecution’s evidence at Oscar Pistorius’ bail hearing  Tuesday. Francois Hougaard communicated with Steenkamp on Twitter shortly before her death and retweeted a picture of them together after she died.

The City Press has been providing their take on the murder as told to them by “sources” close to the investigation. They released in colorful chart on the sequence of events leading up to the murder of Reeva Steenkamp.

The Denver Post reports the Colorado House has passed House Bill 1224 on a 34-31 vote, limiting high capacity gun magazines to just 15 rounds of ammunition. Three Democrats voted against the bill. It is the first of four gun bills the House was taking recorded votes on Monday, the newspaper reports.

State Rep. Beth McCann, D-Denver, one of the gun magazine bill’s sponsors, said high-capacity magazines had been used in numerous high-profile spree shootings, citing in particular the case of Jared Loughner, who used one in the Tucson shooting in which Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head.
