SMH: Chicago Alderman James Cappleman has informed the Salvation Army that it is no longer welcome to feed the poor from its homeless outreach trucks in the Uptown area. He gave the group one month to find a new location, Capt. Nancy Powers, who oversees the Salvation Army’s homeless program in Chicago, told the Chicago Sun Times.

“He decided he felt the unit was pulling homeless into the area, and he does not want us to feed them,” Powers told me.

Powers said the Salvation Army will depart willingly.“We don’t want to be where we’re not wanted,” she said. But Powers expressed concern for those living in the neighborhood who rely on the truck for a daily hot meal — which the agency uses as a lure to connect the homeless with its social workers.

This ought to clear up any lingering doubts as to Cappleman’s motivation in seeking to close the Wilson Men’s Hotel, one of the city’s last two cubicle hotels, the subject of several recent columns.

He’s obviously decided to rid the 46th Ward of unsightly poor people — with a not entirely dissimilar approach to the one he has employed to disappear pigeons.

When I wrote about the pigeon situation (remember the Indiana farmer and his “pigeon shoots,”) I thought Cappleman was just a little aggressive. Now I’m starting to think he’s downright dangerous.

For his part, Cappleman told me via email Friday: “We continue to be concerned about the plight of the homeless, especially during these cold winter months. As the Salvation Army mobile outreach unit tapers off, we are working with other social service agencies to try a new approach that we believe will be more effective with empowering these individuals experiencing homelessness to get out of the cycle of homelessness.”

Naturally, Cappleman did not identify these “other social service agencies” or this “new approach.” Nor did he give a direct answer to my questions about whether he blames the feeding program for bringing the homeless into his ward — or what he thinks is wrong with feeding them.

Wow, so much for those pesky poor people clamoring for a hot meal in his district. As long as they go some place other than his district, he could care less. What ever happened to being a servant-leader?

Cardinal Keith O’Brien Admits Inappropriate Sexual Behavior, Asks Forgiveness from Scotland

When I first heard Benedict XVI abruptly resigned, I immediately said there must have been a scandal brewing. Well, it seems there was, according to a report from Italian newspaper Repubblica, pointing to blackmailing of gay prelates by male prostitutes. The Vatican denied the report, but we all know how they roll. Well, within days, Scotland’s highest ranking Catholic, Cardinal Keith O’Brien abruptly resigned after a scandal broke about his inappropriate advances he made towards three priests and a former priest.

Well, it turns out, those allegations against Keith O’Brien were true. He admitted that his sexual conduct has at times “fallen beneath the standards expected of me.” In a statement, O’Brien apologized and asked for forgiveness from those he had offended. He also apologized to the Catholic Church and the people of Scotland. This points to the fact that sexual misconduct goes way up the chain, to the highest echelons of the Roman Catholic Church.

The statement issued through the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland read: “In recent days certain allegations which have been made against me have become public. Initially, their anonymous and non-specific nature led me to contest them.”However, I wish to take this opportunity to admit that there have been times that my sexual conduct has fallen below the standards expected of me as a priest, archbishop and cardinal.

“To those I have offended, I apologise and ask forgiveness. To the Catholic Church and people of Scotland, I also apologise.

“I will now spend the rest of my life in retirement. I will play no further part in the public life of the Catholic Church in Scotland.” Source

How many more Keith O’Briens exist in the Roman Catholic Church and in churches in other denominations? To take this a step further, what actually is Keith O’Brien referring to when he references inappropriate behavior? Did he engage in similar behavior with kids? Inappropriate sexual conduct has been going on for decades and it is time for this to come to an end. As far back as I can remember, there have been rumblings about Catholic priests engaging in “bad behavior.” I recall one incident in which a priest named Father Pegg, who was connected to Mount Alvernia High School, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, impregnating a teenager. He died in a terrible car accident about the same time the story broke. That story was quashed because he died, but shouldn’t that have been deemed rape of a minor? I am pretty sure she wasn’t his only victim nor was he the only priest on the island of Jamaica that engaged in such behavior.  How many more Father Peggs are in the church? Not just the Roman Catholic Church.

I don’t know what Benedict XVI knew, but it is clear that the Catholic church can’t continue as though the sexual abuse isn’t occurring or didn’t occur. It seems that they continue to kick the can down the road, but isn’t it time for the members to hold the church leaders accountable? People are putting too much trust and faith in church leaders, some of whom are really wolves masquerading as sheep. These scandals should force Christians to reexamine their walk with God and not run to coddle these fallen leaders, giving them a pass, only to commit the same acts all over again. Church leaders should be held accountable when they mess up and the congregants not attack others critical of their leader. This is particularly prevalent in the black church. Take Bishop Eddie L. Long, for example, who fell from grace after being accused of a relationship with four young men, and eventually settling the cases for a large sum of money. When it was painfully obvious that he had betrayed his  family and his church, some clung to some phantom belief that he was being crucified by these four men. They were blindly loyal to the extreme. Such blind loyalty is cult-like, in the tradition of Jim Jones and David Koresh.

Religion was forced upon us through the lens of a small group, who translated the Bible to suit themselves and their views on a wide range of issues including marriage and homosexuality. I don’t believe for a minute that God made a mistake when he created each of us. On that basis, I can’t see homosexuality being considered a mistake, as the right wing evangelicals would have us believe. So, why not allow priests to get married to whomever they choose, male or female? It’s time for us to view the Bible through progressive lens. The Catholic Church has played a role in the lives of many people and have been at the forefront of religious discourse across the world, but it has a dirty secret of widespread sexual misconduct that cannot be ignored. Kicking the can down the road should end with Benedict XVI’s abdication.

Mr. 47 Percent is back and vowing not to go away. He is still clinging to his insensitive position that President Obama’s gifts helped him win reelection. Um, Mitt Romney is obviously a hard learner. He told “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace that the ”The president had the power of incumbency, ‘Obamacare’ was very attractive, particularly to those without insurance, and they came out in large numbers to vote. So that was part of a successful campaign.” One problem with that, demographics were never on Mitt Romney’s side — blacks, Hispanics, Asians, women, LGBT — all voted for Obama in large numbers. Um, I am still waiting on my gift for voting for the black guy.

You will recall Mitt Romney shot himself in the foot during a conference call with donors after the November election when he said Obama was “very generous” in doling out “big gifts” to the “African American community, the Hispanic community and young people.” Instead of taking the high road and apologizing for saying blacks, Hispanics and young voters were bought by the Obama campaign, he dug in and now included Obamacare in the mix. He still can’t differentiate between Obamacare and Romneycare.

Romney reflected on the current sequester and the stalemate in Congress, telling Wallace that ”It kills me not to be there, not to be in the White House doing what needs to be done. It’s hard.” Kills him, tickles his critics that he didn’t win.

Montgomery Ala., police chief Kevin Murphy apologized to Rep. John Lewis, who was one of the Freedom Riders in the 1960s, for failing to protect them during a trip to Montgomery in 1961.

Chief Murphy offered John Lewis his badge in a gesture of reconciliation and said the Montgomery police had “enforced unjust laws” in failing to protect the Freedom Riders more than 50 years ago, NBC News reports. John Lewis and other civil rights activists were beaten by a mob after they arrived at a Montgomery Greyhound bus station in May, 1961.

Lewis, who was arrested during civil rights protests in cities across the south, said it was the first time a police chief had apologized to him. ”It means a great deal,” Lewis said in a video posted on the website of the Montgomery Advertiser. “I teared up. I tried to keep from crying.”

Lewis and other members of Congress were taking part in the 13th Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama, a three-day event that also included trips to Selma, Tuscaloosa and Birmingham.

Murphy said the decision to apologize was easy. ”For me, freedom and the right to live in peace is a cornerstone of our society and that was something that Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Congressman Lewis were trying to achieve” Murphy said. “I think what I did today should have been done a longtime ago. It needed to be done. It needed to be spoken because we have to live with the truth and it is the truth.” Source

Some people will take offense to Chief Kevin Murphy’s apology, but I applaud him for his courage in doing so. The reality is he didn’t have to do it, but he chose to. It is a step in the right direction to help right the wrong.

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman had a testy exchange with ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulous over his controversial trip to North Korea and his comment that Kim Jong-Un is his “friend for life.” Rodman downplayed the trip saying he’s not a diplomat. George Stephanopoulous challenged Dennis Rodman (a huge waste of time) on North Korea’s atrocious human rights record, to which he responded:

“I don’t condone that. I hate the fact that he’s doing that. I didn’t talk about that. I saw people respected him, his family. He’s only 28. He’s not his dad. He’s not his grandpa. He is 28 years old. He’s very humble. He’s a very humble man. He don’t want war, that’s one thing he don’t want. He loves power. He loves control, because of his father, you know, stuff like that. But he’s just…he’s a great guy. He’s just a great guy. You sit down and talk to him,” said Rodman.

When Stephanopoulos went after Rodman on not talking about North Korean death camps he said, “We do the same things here.” A dumbfounded Stephanopoulos replied, “We have prison camps here in the United States?” Source

If anyone thought Dennis Rodman could be the voice of reason, they have another thing coming. He made this trip a ridiculous event. It is pretty clear that Dennis Rodman has enjoyed the benefits of living in a country as great as the United States and has failed to do his homework about North Korea and Kim Jong-Un’s ancestors.

Connecticut state Rep. Ernest Hewett apologized for telling a 17 year old girl during a Feb. 20 committee meeting, “If you are bashful, I got a snake sitting under my desk here.” Hewett was also stripped of his leadership post for what many have characterized as a lewd comment to the teenager, who had testified in support of more funding for the state’s Science Center’s ambassador program.

She had told lawmakers that by participating in the program, which included handling snakes and turtles, she became more outgoing. Hewett told ABC News’ New Haven affiliate WTNH-TV that he meant nothing sexual by the comment.

“I have apologized to her for what was taken out of context,” he said. In a statement, Matt Fleury, the president and CEO of the Connecticut Science Center said he believed the apology was sincere and passed it on to the student, who also accepted it.

Since the incident, Hewett has been removed as deputy speaker of the House, but some Republicans are calling for even stronger action, calling Hewett’s comment a “disgrace and embarrassment.” Source

Abdallah Mahfouz proposes renting out Egypt’s historical sites to help jumpstart the country’s economy. Is that smart? Russia Today reports, renting out these landmarks, including the Giza Pyramids, the Abu Simbel Temple and the Luxor temples, to international clients could bring in up to $150 billion over five years, according to a proposal from the Egypt’s antiquities ministry.

“Cry dear Sphinx, people want to rent you out and maybe later cut you into pieces and sell you! Shame on those who want to rent you. You are the symbol of dignity, power and Egypt’s ancient civilization,” Egyptology professor Ahmed Saeed of Cairo University wrote on his Facebook page, according to Ahramonline. The country’s antiquities ministry has reportedly rejected the controversial plan, which became the talk of the town and gave rise to various rumors. The Gulf state of Qatar reportedly expressed interest in renting Egypt’s landmarks for five years for $200 billion, according to Al Arabiya. Source

Can you put a cost on such historical sites and is it a smart move? Sounds like they will be sacrificing their true identity for material gain. Egypt’s economy has been weakened by a whole host of forces, but are they willing to sacrifice what their ancestors built? No amount of money can ever put a value on the historical significance of what the early Egyptians accomplished.
