BREAKING NEWS: Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Guilty of Racketeering

Breaking News: Ex-Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick guilty of racketeering conspiracy and extortion. CBS Detroit reports he looked stunned as verdict read. Kwame Kilpatrick was convicted on 24 of 30 counts, with the most serious charge being racketeering. His father, Bernard Kilpatrick was convicted on a tax charge. The disgraced ex-mayor’s good friend Bobby Ferguson faced 11 charges.

Kilpatrick and co-defendants Bernard Kilpatrick and Bobby Ferguson were back in federal court on a bond hearing to determine if their bond would be revoked and they would be immediately remanded to jail or if they could remain free until sentencing. Several of the charges — including racketeering — carry a possible penalty of 20 years in prison.

Count One: (All Three) Racketeering conspiracy: Joining together to conduct a criminal enterprise, which in this case the prosecution dubbed the “Kilpatrick Enterprise,” an alleged scheme of kickbacks to enrich themselves using the mayor’s office.
