***Registered Sex Offender Donald James Smith charged with murder in death of Charish Lilly Perriwinkle.***
The body of missing eight-year-old Charish Lilly Perriwinkle was found at a church off Broward Road in Jacksonville, Fla., Saturday morning. Donald James Smith, the registered sex offender since 1992, suspected of kidnapping her, was arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office a little after 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
Charish Lilly Perriwinkle was reported missing by her mother about 11 p.m. Friday at the Walmart Supercenter on Lem Turner Road. The girl was reportedly taken by a man who befriended her mother at the Walmart and said he was taking her to the store’s McDonald’s for a snack.
The suspect was arrested by traffic cops who were on the lookout for his minivan. Police said he was driving towards the interstate and looking to make a getaway.
Donald James Smith had been released from prison three weeks ago. He was serving time on charges of intentional child abuse and impersonating a public employee. He also served prison time for attempted kidnapping and lewd and lascivious assault on children.
I don’t understand how this mother would meet someone in Walmart, or any store for that matter, and allow that person to even entertain the thought of taking her child to get something to eat. That defies logic, considering that there are sex offenders all over the place.
