David Barnes, a Wisconsin businessman, was killed after being caught in the crossfire as police tried to stop robbers at a clothing store in Savanna-la-Mar, Jamaica on Saturday. Barnes, who owned several Cost Cutter salons, was killed along with robber, identified only as Bigga, and a third person was wounded.
The Jamaica Star reported that the Constabulary Communication Network said David Barnes, a father of two, was killed when members of a gang fired shots in the store. Savanna-la-Mar, located in Westmoreland, isn’t normally frequented by tourists.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force said Bigga, a notorious criminal, was wanted for rape, murder and armed robbery. A 9mm pistol was recovered from his body.
The death of David Barnes is being investigated by an independent police commission and the US Embassy is awaiting an official report from Jamaica.
