A Mississippi grand jury has declined to indict a white officer, Kevin Herrington, in the death of Jonathan Sanders, who is black, saying he died of asphyxiation after ingesting too much cocaine.
The grand jury also said the officer did not use excessive force. There were allegations of police brutality following Sanders’ death in July.
According to the grand jury report Herrington had “reasonable suspicion to believe Jonathan Sanders was involved in drug activity.”
The coroner said Jonathan Sanders died of asphyxiation associated with “acute cocaine toxicity.” The report also cast doubt on the officer’s alleged use of racial slurs during the confrontation with Sanders.
