Philando Castile was identified as by his mother as the man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Falcon Heights, Minn., on Wednesday night.
His girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, recorded the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook Live. Castile is seen slumped over with blood all his shirt. The officer can seen pointing the gun in the vehicle. The video has since been removed by Facebook but not before it was shared thousands of times. The video was posted on Lavish Reynolds’ Facebook page. It is not clear if she is his girlfriend.
They were pulled over pulled over at Larpenteur Avenue and Fry Street for a broken tail light, his girlfriend said repeatedly. The officer asked him for his license and registration. She said, “He told him that it was in his wallet, but he had a pistol on him because he’s licensed to carry. The officer said don’t move. As he was putting his hands back up, the officer shot him in the arm four or five times.”
The video shows a police officer holding his gun on the couple from outside the car. He can be heard to saying, “I told him not to reach for it. I told him to get his hand out.” Castile, who his girlfriend said worked for the St. Paul school system, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The woman’s daughter was in the car and witnessed the shooting. She can be heard consoling her mother after they were placed in a police car. It is reprehensible that the officer shot into the car with a child present. Clearly that should have been a deterrent.
Philando Castile’s shooting comes on the heels of Alton Sterling’s shooting death outside a Baton Rouge convenience store by two officers.
