Police have launched a manhunt for Markeith Loyd for the murder of Orlando Master Sgt. Debra Clayton.
Clayton, a 17-year veteran of the OPD, was shot and killed on Monday morning. An Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy on a motorcycle was killed in an accident during the manhunt for Loyd. The officer’s name has not yet been released.
Clayton tried to arrest Loyd in connection with the murder of his pregnant girlfriend, Sadie Dixon, 24, in December. Loyd also wounded her brother, Ronald Steward, in the shooting, WESH reports.
Police say Clayton was killed in the parking lot of a Walmart superstore on Princeton Street. She was trying to corner Loyd and arrest him when he shot her to death, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
Police say after Loyd fled the scene, he shot at an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy who spotted him. He missed the officer, but hit his SUV instead.
Police Chief John Mina said Clayton was able to fire back at the suspect, though they do not believe he was injured.
Markeith Loyd is considered armed and dangerous. The police is asking people not to approach him, but to call 911 instead.
This loss only strengthens our resolve to fight for justice. Sgt. Clayton grew up in this area and made it her life's work to protect it. pic.twitter.com/4r1ZVj5JLe
