Angela Merkel, leader of the free world, scored a major win today after her conservative party easily won the state vote, as the she seeks her fourth term as the chancellor of Germany.
Projections show Merkel’s conservative party won an election in Germany’s western Saarland state on Sunday, with an unexpectedly strong performance.
“The outcome was disappointing for her center-left rivals, the Social Democrats, who were facing their first electoral test since the party’s nomination in January of Martin Schulz as Merkel’s rival for the chancellery boosted its poll ratings,” ABC News reports.
“Projections prepared for ARD and ZDF public television, based on exit polls and partial counting, showed Merkel’s Christian Democrats polling up to 41 percent in the election for Saarland’s state legislature. They showed the Social Democrats receiving up to 30 percent of the vote.”
This comes as Merkel’s first meeting with Donald Trump was awkward, to say the least. He also presented her with a bill for $375 billion for NATO “dues” owed. NATO isn’t a club. There are no dues to be paid. Just more shameful and infantile behavior from Trump.
