A group of torch-wielding protesters, led by white supremacist Richard Spencer, shouted “Russia is our friend” and “blood and soil” in front of the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert Lee in Lee’s Park in Charlottesville, Va., Saturday night.
The protesters disbursed quickly when the police intervened. It’s shameful that this display, in the tradition of the Ku Klux Klan, is happening in our country in 2017.
“Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer called the event “either profoundly ignorant or was designed to instill fear in our minority populations in a way that hearkens back to the days of the KKK. Either way, as mayor of this city, I want everyone to know this: we reject this intimidation. We are a welcoming city, but such intolerance is not welcome here,” the Daily Progress reports.
