Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, arrested for the abduction and murder of Muslim teen identified as Nabra Hassanen in Virginia. Police arrested Torres after the teen’s remains were found in a pond on Sunday afternoon.
NBC Washington reports witnesses said Nabra, 17, was with a group of teens from their mosque when they were accosted by a man who shouted insults at them. The man got out of his vehicle wielding a baseball bat. He attacked Nabra and then disappeared from the scene with her.
Hussein’s friends reported her abduction to the police, who mounted a frantic search. The teen’s remains were found on Sunday after police pulled over a motorist driving erratically. The suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of murder. Police also found a baseball bat, believed to be the murder weapon, in the area.
Isra Chaker, who is known to Nabra’s family, wrote in a Facebook post that Nabra and her friends were getting food while on break from praying at All Dulles Area Muslim Society Center (ADAMS) in Herndon on June 17. She said Nabra and her friend were accosted by two men in a car when they were going back to the center.
Chaker said, “A car pulled up, an altercation took place (the nature of which is still unknown) and then the man came out with a baseball bat swinging at the girls. Nabra was assaulted and was left behind. She then went missing (presumably kidnapped by the suspect) and was found dead this afternoon.”
Nabra was a sophomore at South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia. Darwin Torres is a resident of Sterling, Va.
Police have not said they were investigating the teen’s death as a hate crime. Hate crimes have been on the rise in the U.S., particularly after Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election.
