Justine Damond, 40, was shot the death by a Minneapolis police officer after she called to report an assault in an alley behind her home shortly before midnight on Saturday. It is unclear why the officer opened fire.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that an officer, who was in the passenger seat of the squad car that responded to the call, opened fire across the driver’s seat and struck Damond while she spoke with them.
Minneapolis police have not disclosed her name, but her identity was confirmed by people who live in her neighborhood.
“The shooting happened at the end of the alley on W. 51st Street between Washburn and Xerxes avenues S. in the city’s Fulton neighborhood,” the Star Tribune reports.
Justine Damond is from from Sydney, Australia. She lived in the 5000 block of Washburn with her fiancé.
