Justine Damond’s lawyer, Robert Bennett, sparked fierce online backlash after he said she is “the most innocent victim” of a police shooting he’s ever seen. Um, how about Philando Castile, who was gunned down by former cop Jeronimo Yanez in front of a four-year-old child?
By the way, Bennett represented the Castile family and may have had the best of intentions when he touted Damond’s innocence. But we know what this is all about — “whiteness.” He really means she’s the whitest victim of a police shooting he has ever seen. Pathetic.
The Star Tribune: “Calling Damond “the most innocent victim” of a police shooting he has ever seen, he quickly added, “I’m not saying Philando wasn’t innocent, too, or that Frank Baker wasn’t innocent. But here is someone who called the police and was trying to stop someone from being hurt … and ends up being shot in her pajamas.”
Damond was fatally shot by Officer Mohammed Noor after she reported a possible sexual assault in an alley behind her home in a Minneapolis suburb. Noor fired across his partner in the driver’s seat of their squad car, hitting Damond in the chest.
Twitter had a lot to say about Robert Bennett’s comment:
