The New York Times reports that the diplomats must leave Russia by Sept. 1. “We waited for quite some time that maybe something will change for the better, had such hope that the situation will somehow change, but, judging by everything, if it changes, it will not be soon,” Putin said.
A top Russian official said that the retaliation is “long overdue” and is in response to new sanctions passed by the U.S. Congress. The official vowed more payback may follow if the U.S. doesn’t change its approach.
During an interview on ABC News’ This Week, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov called the sanctions package, which aims to penalize Russia for interfering in the 2016 presidential election, “a completely weird and unacceptable piece of legislation” that was “the last drop.”
“If the US side decides to move further towards further deterioration we will answer, we will respond in kind. We will mirror this. We will retaliate,” Ryabkov continued. He would not say if further response would involve economic sanctions on U.S. businesses and products.
“We are not gamblers. We are people who consider things very seriously and very responsibly. But I can assure you that different options are on the table and consideration is being given to all sorts of things, both symmetrical or asymmetrical to use a very popular word in the world of diplomacy,” he said.
This is not good for America. I am sure that there are a lot of CIA case officers who are under official cover who will be among the 755 diplomats getting the boot. That’s not good for intelligence operations.

Booting 755 US diplomats out of Russia is just going to make it harder for oligarchs to get visas to visit their kids in America.
