Special Counsel Robert Mueller charges lawyer Alex Van Der Zwaan with lying to the FBI about conversations with ex-Trump aide Rick Gates in connection with the Russia investigation.
Van Der Zwaan, who was charged on Feb. 16, is set to plead guilty later today for making false statements to the FBI. He helped to prepare a Ukraine report for former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. The report was on the trial of Ukrainian politician Yulia Tymoshenko.
Mueller flipped him because the charging document makes clear that a more serious charge of destruction of evidence was not brought against him. I would love to know the identity of the “person A” that the document references.
Alex van der Zwaan identifies himself on his LinkedIn page, which has since been taken down, as an associate in the London office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He is the Russian-speaking son-in-law of oligarch German Khan.
Sounds to me like Rick Gates is singing like a canary to keep himself out of prison for decades.
Donald Trump will continue to spin out on Twitter as the walls close in on him in the Russia investigation.
