Off-duty Chicago police Commander Paul Bauer dies after being shot multiple times while chasing a suspect across from City Hall.
Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a news conference that Bauer was “senselessly murdered” on Tuesday afternoon, while he was “assisting officers in apprehending a suspicious person.” A person of interest is in police custody.
Bauer was shot multiple times in a stairwell in the Thompson Center in the Loop. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Commander Paul Bauer, who worked at the 18th District, was a 31 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department.
