Donald Trump rightfully commutes Alice Johnson’s sentence but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s still a racist whose policies adversely impact black and brown Americans.
Trump commuted Johnson’s sentence after Kim Kardashian West “lobbied” him during a White House meeting last week. It seems that flattery is the way to get Donald Trump to do one’s bidding. He can be manipulated to do anything. No wonder Kanye West was so effusive in his praise of Trump a few weeks ago. It paid off.
The White House issued a statement on Alice Johnson’s sentence being commuted:
Today, President Donald J. Trump granted a commutation to Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old great-grandmother who has served almost 22 years in Federal prison for a first-time criminal offense.
Ms. Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades. Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates. Her Warden, Case Manager, and Vocational Training Instructor have all written letters in support of her clemency. According to her Warden, Arcala Washington-Adduci, “since [Ms. Johnson’s] arrival at this institution, she has exhibited outstanding and exemplary work ethic. She is considered to be a model inmate who is willing to go above and beyond in all work tasks.”
While this Administration will always be very tough on crime, it believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance.
Everything Donald Trump has done so far is contrary to his statement above that he believes in giving people a second chance. He and Attorney General Jeff Sessions want to give drug dealers the death penalty. There are also children separated from their parents and living in what appears to be a modern-day concentration camp.
Trump attacked black NFL players as sons of bitches for taking a knee during the pre-game national anthem, though he doesn’t know the words. Just yesterday, he attacked the Philadelphia Eagles because only a few players had planned to show up for the White House visit.
Reaction on Twitter:
BREAKING: Alice Johnson, who was serving a life sentence for non-violent drug offences, was pardoned by President Trump after Kim Kardashian advocated for her early release.
ALSO BREAKING: Paul Manafort has requested a meeting with Kim Kardashian.

DON’T FORGET: Though Trump has apparently intervened on Alice Johnson’s behalf, his DOJ has taken steps to ensure more people like her will be imprisoned on drug charges. He’s even suggested the death penalty for dealers (that would’ve included Johnson) https://t.co/2uP0VB9Qfs

Congratulations to Alice Johnson and I'm guessing this means more pardons and commutations for African-Americans incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses who DON'T have celebrities with access to the president, right?

Kim Kardashian flattered Trump and offered him more promotion that he desperately needed. He has now pardoned Alice Johnson. The President of the United States is willing to do anything for someone with more Twitter followers and this should frighten you to the core.

The Alice Johnson pardon is fantastic news… full stop…. but it is also a bit terrifying that a celeb like Kim Kardashian can suck up to Trump and instantly get results. America, presented by E!

Alice Johnson’s pardon should terrify everyone. Trump can be manipulated into anything by anyone willing to flatter him.

Alice Johnson deserved freedom — a worthy cause.
Now, I hope she and Kanye will acknowledge the level of their influence and the damage they cause when they use their platform problematically.
