Kenyan authorities apologized after police used tear gas on students protesting the sale of the playground at Lang’ata school in Nairobi to a developer.

Internal Security Minister Joseph Nkaissery apologized after meeting with students at the school on Tuesday. He confirmed that the playground belonged to the school.

BBC News reports the students had returned to school after a “two-week teachers’ strike to find the playground fenced off.”

Teachers and activists joined the students in trying to “push down the barriers” before the police intervened, using tear gas to disperse the protesters.

Nigerian Islamist Group Boko Haram Kidnaps 80 in Cameroon

Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram kidnapped about 80 people, mostly women and children, in neighboring Cameroon.

In the latest attack, the suspected militants “burst into two villages in the Tourou area,” a police officer told AFP.

The kidnappings, among the largest abductions on Cameroonian soil since the militants began expanding their zone of operations across the border last year, came as neighboring Chad deployed troops to support Cameroon’s forces in the area.

“According to our initial information, around 30 adults, most of them herders, and 50 young girls and boys aged between 10 and 15 years were abducted,” a senior army officer deployed to northern Cameroon told Reuters.

He said the early-morning attack had targeted the village of Mabass and several other villages along the porous border with Nigeria. Soldiers intervened and exchanged fire with the raiders for around two hours, he added. Source: Reuters

Three people were reportedly killed in the attack. The West continues to remain virtually silent on the atrocities being inflicted by Boko Haram.

No Pat Houston, Angela Bassett-Directed Whitney Movie Wasn’t Terrible

No Pat Houston, the Angela Bassett-directed Whitney Houston biopic wasn’t one of Lifetime’s bad movies. My expectations were pretty low, since Lifetime has a history of movie bombs. In fact “Whitney” was quite tastefully done, but glossed over a lot about Whitney. We learned nothing new about Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s toxic marriage. It mostly focused on four years of her life, from 1989-1993.
Still, the response on social media was a far cry from the firestorm that erupted over Lifetime’s Aaliyah movie. Still, I would have liked to see more about Whitney Houston, played by Yaya DaCosta, and not so much about Bobby Brown, played by Arlen Escarpeta.

Pat Houston wrote, “If you watch this movie, watch it knowing that Lifetime is notorious for making bad biopics of deceased celebrities and brace yourself for the worst.””But misrepresenting the term friendship to advance an agenda is not only disrespectful and dishonest but a slap in the face to her true and loyal friends. You should expect people will always rise to the occasion for prominence and profit – not love, respect or honor. I question the morality of the making of this because of the lack of experience knowing Whitney’s life. Never would Whitney allow her story to be told by an inexperienced team and how naive of anyone to think otherwise, unless you’re caught up in illusions of grandeur that you can just do anything and people will accept it. This made for TV movie is certainly not a trailer to Whitney’s life story.”

I am not sure what the Houston family was trying to cover up when Pat Houston told fans to brace themselves. It was documented that Whitney Houston was introduced to cocaine by her brother and not by Bobby Brown. Maybe that’s the image of Whitney Houston they didn’t want to relive. Angela Bassett stayed away from the “crack is whack” drama, and the last days of her life. The family may have wanted Bassett to gloss over the singer’s flaws and paint her as an angel, as we saw with the “Selena” biopic.

It is clear that Whitney Houston had many demons, but she seemed to have been a person who was full of life and loved hard. I wish Angela Bassett had focused a little more about Whitney’s strong points. Not mostly her weaknesses. I don’t think she corrupted Bobby Brown. He was already corrupted in so many ways. The end result was “Whitney” was really Bobby Brown’s redemption. Some folks may want to judge Whitney Houston for falling in love with a “bad boy,” but I think many, many women love as hard as Whitney Houston did and also had Bobby Browns in their lives.

All in all, Angela Bassett did a good job and I hope more film directing is in the future for her. Next time around, I hope she aims higher.
