Race car driver Kevin Ward Jr., 20, was struck and killed by NASCAR driver Tony Stewart after he angrily approached his car during a sprint car race in Canandaigua, New York, Saturday night. Ward was upset Stewart had hit his car during a previous lap.
A video of the incident has surfaced and purportedly shows the altercation. A driver, thought to be Kevin Ward Jr., is seen exiting his crashed vehicle and stepping into oncoming traffic before he is suddenly struck and thrown in the air by Stewart’s car.
Onlookers say Ward was spun out of the race by Stewart and was hit as he passed the spot on his next lap, thought to be in Turn 2. Witnesses say Stewart, a three-time NASCAR champ, hit Ward on the prior lap — spun him around. Kevin Ward Jr., then hopped out of his car, yelling and pointing a finger at Tony Stewart. He struck the young driver when he came around the turn.
