ESPN: Stephen A. Smith Won’t Appear on “First Take” Or ESPN Radio for Week

ESPN announces Stephen A. Smith will not appear on “First Take” or ESPN Radio for the next week. He will return to ESPN next Wednesday. Um, sounds to me like he was suspended. This comes after he apologized for suggesting women shouldn’t provoke domestic abuse.

Last Friday, Smith suggested that women are to blame when they become victims of domestic violence, during a discussion of Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice two-game suspension for assaulting his then-fiancee. Rice was seen on video dragging the unconsious woman out of an Atlantic City casino elevator.

Smith said, “Let’s make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions.”

On Monday, Stephen A. Smith said: “On Friday, speaking right here on ‘First Take’ on the subject of domestic violence, I made what can only amount to the most egregious error of my career My words came across that it is somehow a woman’s fault. This was not my intent. It is not what I was trying to say. Yet the failure to clearly articulate something different lies squarely on my shoulders.”

Well, CNN’s Carol Costello got her wish — Stephen A. Smith was suspended.

Ghana World Cup soccer team is in turmoil as Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari were both suspended “indefinitely” for, respectively, “vulgar verbal insults” and “unprovoked physical attack.” The rift between the coach and an official continues to grow.

The Black Stars are to face Portugal on Thursday in a decisive Group G clash that could still see the African side qualify for the round of 16.

However, they will be without Boateng and Muntari, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announcing on the morning of the game that Boateng has been suspended over claims he insulted Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, while Muntari allegedly attacked a member of the organisation.

An official statement on Boateng said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has approved coach Kwesi Appiah’s decision to suspend Kevin-Prince Boateng indefinitely from the Black Stars. The decision takes immediate effect.

“The decision was taken following Boateng’s vulgar verbal insults targeted at coach Kwesi Appiah during the team’s training session in Maceio this week.

“Boateng has since showed no remorse for his actions which has resulted in the decision. Boateng’s accreditation for the 2014 World Cup has been withdrawn with immediate effect.”

separate statement on Muntari added: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended Sulley Ali Muntari indefinitely from the Black Stars with immediate effect.

“The decision was taken in the wake of his unprovoked physical attack on an Executive Committee member of the GFA and a management member of the Black Stars, Mr Moses Armah on Tuesday June 24, 2014 during a meeting. Source: ESPN

Luis Suarez Gets 9-Game Ban for Biting Italian Defender During World Cup Match

FIFA announces nine-game ban for Uruguay star striker Luis Suarez after biting incident in World Cup match against Italy earlier this week. Pictures of Suarez appearing to bite the Italian during a game last year have also surfaced.

This isn’t the first time Luis Suarez has been caught biting opponents. He got a 10-game ban last April for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. This came after he had previously been banned for seven games for biting   PSV’s Ottman Bakkal while playing for Ajax in Nov 2010. This is why FIFA should have banned Luis Suarez for two years.

FIFA banned Luis Suarez for four months from all soccer-related activity and fined him 100,000 Swiss Francs.

NY Times: USA Has 63 Percent Chance of Advancing at World Cup

NY Times:  United States advances with a tie or win against Germany. If the United States loses, it will be rooting for anything but a Ghana win in the Ghana-Portugal match — because Ghana is in a better tiebreaker position than Portugal. The United States, regardless of what it does, advances with a tie between Ghana and Portugal; if Portugal wins, Portugal is likely to lose the tiebreaker to the United States, whereas Ghana has a decent chance to win the tiebreaker over the United States. The United States wins the group with a win over Germany.

A Neo-Nazi sympathizer invaded the pitch during the Germany-Ghana match at the World Cup on Saturday. Fare, the fans’ anti-discrimination network, said the man had messages written on his chest and back, including “HH,” for Heil Hitler, and “SS,” referring to the Nazi paramilitary unit.

Fare, which is preparing a report for FIFA, also found instances of fans wearing blackface makeup at the match in Fortaleza without intervention from the security at the stadium.

The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee is “analyzing” both incidents.

Baylor University center Isaiah Austin’s NBA aspirations have come to a screeching halt after he was diagnosed with Marfan sydrome, a rare genetic disorder.

Baylor coach Scott Drew issued a news release on Sunday saying that the diagnosis means Isaiah Austin will not be able to play in the NBA. He was predicted to be a second-round draft pick.

Marfan syndrome affects the body’s connective tissue and can weaken the aorta, which is the artery that supplies blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

Isaiah Austin averaged 12.1 points and 6.9 rebounds this season. He had announced in April that he planned on leaving Baylor after his sophomore season to enter the NBA draft, which is on Thursday.
