ESPN announces Stephen A. Smith will not appear on “First Take” or ESPN Radio for the next week. He will return to ESPN next Wednesday. Um, sounds to me like he was suspended. This comes after he apologized for suggesting women shouldn’t provoke domestic abuse.
Last Friday, Smith suggested that women are to blame when they become victims of domestic violence, during a discussion of Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice two-game suspension for assaulting his then-fiancee. Rice was seen on video dragging the unconsious woman out of an Atlantic City casino elevator.
Smith said, “Let’s make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions.”
On Monday, Stephen A. Smith said: “On Friday, speaking right here on ‘First Take’ on the subject of domestic violence, I made what can only amount to the most egregious error of my career My words came across that it is somehow a woman’s fault. This was not my intent. It is not what I was trying to say. Yet the failure to clearly articulate something different lies squarely on my shoulders.”
Well, CNN’s Carol Costello got her wish — Stephen A. Smith was suspended.
