UPDATE: Michael Sam gets lifeline, to join Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

(OPINION) — I am tired of people putting labels on everything like Michael Sam as the first openly gay player in the NFL and ESPN reporter Josina Anderson focusing on his shower habits. I care more about what Michael Sam could bring to the field and not about his sexual orientation or his shower habits. Sorry, I don’t care whether he sleeps with a man or a woman. That’s his prerogative.

Tim Tebow’s NFL career was derailed because he wasn’t quiet about his Christian faith and now Michael Sam’s NFL aspirations are disappearing before his eyes. So, whose fault is it? ESPN went all out to show him kissing his boyfriend Vito Cammisano shortly after he got the call that the Rams had drafted him. Second, they didn’t stop there. They went all out with the Josina Anderson interview about his shower habits during training camp, that he waited until the other players shower before he does. Um, did we really need to know all this? ESPN was later forced to apologize for the hit-job on Sam. It’s all a distraction and one big media hype that Michael Sam gave a helping hand.

Some people say he’s a mediocre football player at best, which they said was evident from his being the 249th draft pick. They blamed that on a mediocre showing at the Combine. Some talent evaluators believe he’s too small to play regularly on the defensive line and not athletic enough to play in space as a linebacker, the Huffington Post reports. Still, the St. Louis Rams coach said he did well during his brief stint with the team. Others say he’s being ignored by other teams because of his sexual orientation and that he shouldn’t have come out of the closet. Well, that could be true, but shouldn’t he be free to be himself? Jesse Owens didn’t say, um, well, let me run in whiteface because the world isn’t ready for a black man to break down the color barrier in track and field.

Buffalo Bills center Eric Wood blamed Sam’s fate on ESPN, after 31 other teams passed over him on waivers on Sunday. In response to a question from Ross Tucker about Sam’s lack of practice squad offers, Wood said it was ESPN’s fault, adding, “no-one wants the distraction.” It’s very surprising to me that no other team picked him up for their practice squad. Michael Sam deserves a chance to play, but I am afraid that Eric Wood might be right, no-one wants the distraction and for that he’s paying the price. Sounds to me like Michael Sam is literally being Tebowed out of the NFL before he even got a chance to play in a game. Well, as if it couldn’t get any bleaker for Michael Sam, he didn’t even make the Rams 10-man practice squad. His NFL ambitions are getting dimmer and dimmer.

Race Car Driver Kevin Ward Jr. Hit and Killed by NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart

Race car driver Kevin Ward Jr., 20, was struck and killed by NASCAR driver Tony Stewart after he angrily approached his car during a sprint car race in Canandaigua, New York, Saturday night. Ward was upset Stewart had hit his car during a previous lap.

A video of the incident has surfaced and purportedly shows the altercation. A driver, thought to be Kevin Ward Jr., is seen exiting his crashed vehicle and stepping into oncoming traffic before he is suddenly struck and thrown in the air by Stewart’s car.

Onlookers say Ward was spun out of the race by Stewart and was hit as he passed the spot on his next lap, thought to be in Turn 2. Witnesses say Stewart, a three-time NASCAR champ, hit Ward on the prior lap — spun him around. Kevin Ward Jr., then hopped out of his car, yelling and pointing a finger at Tony Stewart. He struck the young driver when he came around the turn.

Here’s the video showing Kevin Ward Jr. being struck by Tony Stewart:

Ed O’Bannon Case: Judge Rules College Football, Basketball Players Can Get Share of Revenue

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken ruled against the NCAA on Friday, paving the way for college athletes to share in licensing revenue. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by Ed O’Bannon, a former UCLA basketball player, who sued after discovering his image was used in a EA Sports video.

Judge Wilken issued an injunction that will bar the NCAA “from enforcing any rules or bylaws that would prohibit its member schools and conferences from offering their FBS football or Division 1 basketball recruits a limited share of the revenues generated from the use of their names, images and likenesses in addition to a full grant-in-aid.”

Judge Wilken also said the injunction will not prevent the NCAA for implementing rules that would cap the amount of revenue that can be paid to athletes. The cap wilil not be allowed to be set below the cost of their attendance, she said.

ESPN: Stephen A. Smith Won’t Appear on “First Take” Or ESPN Radio for Week

ESPN announces Stephen A. Smith will not appear on “First Take” or ESPN Radio for the next week. He will return to ESPN next Wednesday. Um, sounds to me like he was suspended. This comes after he apologized for suggesting women shouldn’t provoke domestic abuse.

Last Friday, Smith suggested that women are to blame when they become victims of domestic violence, during a discussion of Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice two-game suspension for assaulting his then-fiancee. Rice was seen on video dragging the unconsious woman out of an Atlantic City casino elevator.

Smith said, “Let’s make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions.”

On Monday, Stephen A. Smith said: “On Friday, speaking right here on ‘First Take’ on the subject of domestic violence, I made what can only amount to the most egregious error of my career My words came across that it is somehow a woman’s fault. This was not my intent. It is not what I was trying to say. Yet the failure to clearly articulate something different lies squarely on my shoulders.”

Well, CNN’s Carol Costello got her wish — Stephen A. Smith was suspended.

Ghana World Cup soccer team is in turmoil as Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari were both suspended “indefinitely” for, respectively, “vulgar verbal insults” and “unprovoked physical attack.” The rift between the coach and an official continues to grow.

The Black Stars are to face Portugal on Thursday in a decisive Group G clash that could still see the African side qualify for the round of 16.

However, they will be without Boateng and Muntari, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announcing on the morning of the game that Boateng has been suspended over claims he insulted Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, while Muntari allegedly attacked a member of the organisation.

An official statement on Boateng said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has approved coach Kwesi Appiah’s decision to suspend Kevin-Prince Boateng indefinitely from the Black Stars. The decision takes immediate effect.

“The decision was taken following Boateng’s vulgar verbal insults targeted at coach Kwesi Appiah during the team’s training session in Maceio this week.

“Boateng has since showed no remorse for his actions which has resulted in the decision. Boateng’s accreditation for the 2014 World Cup has been withdrawn with immediate effect.”

separate statement on Muntari added: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended Sulley Ali Muntari indefinitely from the Black Stars with immediate effect.

“The decision was taken in the wake of his unprovoked physical attack on an Executive Committee member of the GFA and a management member of the Black Stars, Mr Moses Armah on Tuesday June 24, 2014 during a meeting. Source: ESPN

Luis Suarez Gets 9-Game Ban for Biting Italian Defender During World Cup Match

FIFA announces nine-game ban for Uruguay star striker Luis Suarez after biting incident in World Cup match against Italy earlier this week. Pictures of Suarez appearing to bite the Italian during a game last year have also surfaced.

This isn’t the first time Luis Suarez has been caught biting opponents. He got a 10-game ban last April for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. This came after he had previously been banned for seven games for biting   PSV’s Ottman Bakkal while playing for Ajax in Nov 2010. This is why FIFA should have banned Luis Suarez for two years.

FIFA banned Luis Suarez for four months from all soccer-related activity and fined him 100,000 Swiss Francs.
