4 Charged with Hazing After VSU Freshmen Marvell Edmonson, Jauwan Holmes Drown During Hazing

The body of Virginia State University freshman Marvell Edmonson, 19, of Portsmouth, was recovered Monday, while the search continued Tuesday for the body of Jauwan M. Holmes, 19, of Newport News. The freshmen were swept away while trying to cross a swift, rain-swollen river as part of an initiation rite, the Washington Post reports.

Four suspects were arrested and charged with five counts of hazing. Their names are:  James A. Mackey Sr., 35, of Richomnd; Eriq K. Benson, 19, of Quinton; and Cory D. Baytop, 26, of Newport News. Police are currently looking for Charles E. Zollicoffer II, 29.

The four men charged are connected to the “Men of Honor” that conducted an initiation on Saturday that required seven male VSU students to walk through the rushing rapids of the Appomattox River, police said. Some were pulled to safety, while Jauwan Holmes and Marvell Edmonson were swept away.

Nine UF Alpha Phi Alpha Members Face Hazing Charges for "Thunderslaps"

Nine members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at the University of Florida in Gainesville, are facing misdemeanor hazing charges after they allegedly struck and paddled five pledges and hitting them in the chest during a hazing ritual known as “thunderslaps.” If convicted, the could be incarcerated for a year and fined $1,000. They could also be suspended or expelled. The incident allegedly occurred between January 22 and February 1 in a Gainesville home where several fraternity members resided.

Charges were filed against  Safo Agyemang, 26; Metkel Beiene, 22; Chad Billington II, 22; Brandon Daniel, 21; Gregory Davis, 22; Jason Dubery, 23; Dominique Martin, 21; Christoper Jenkins, 22; and Gary Terrell, 24. All the suspects were UF students at the time of the alleged hazing except for Agyemang, who is an alumnus, the Gainesville Sun reports. The State Attorney’s office dropped charges against one  fraternity member, Bryan Mizell,  who was named in the police complaint,  for insufficient evidence, the newspaper said.

I have never understood the relevance of hazing in any social organization. It’s just plain crazy. I remember as an undergraduate student at Ohio University, one of my roommates pledged Delta Sigma Theta, she could not speak to me because she was on social silence. The most disturbing thing about these organizations is that once you go through the initiation process, your grades suffer. Pledging a sorority or fraternity isn’t the reason one goes to college. It’s to get an education.

Parents of Murdered FAMU Drum Major Robert Champion to Sue Fabulous Coach Lines

The Parents of FAMU Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion plans to sue the historically black university’s long-time charter bus company, Fabulous Coach Lines, for the hazing death of their son. The Champions allege  the company knew, or should have known, that hazing took place on their buses.

Some black news sites are going overboard reporting that Robert Champion was gay. Um, who cares? Unless his sexual orientation was the reason why he was beaten to death, then it’s quite irrelevant. We had previously heard about him being gay, but we declined on reporting about it because if the police were told this when they characterized his death a result of hazing and didn’t connect the two to say this was a hate crime, then why throw it out there? I’m sure Robert Champion wasn’t the first homosexual to pledge a fraternity.

Police charged Sean Hobson and Aaron Golson with hazing and battery, and James Harris with hazing in the beating of Florida A&M University Marching 100 member Bria Shante Hunter on October 31 and November 1, just days before drum major Robert Champion was found dead from suspected hazing. Tallahassee police said Bria Shante Hunter was beaten with fists and a metal ruler to initiate her into the “Red Dawg Order” — a band clique for students who come from Georgia, the AJC reports.

Hunter told police that days later the pain became so unbearable that she went to the hospital. Besides her broken thigh bone, she had had blood clots in her legs.

Leon County records show that all three arrested men were in jail on Monday night. A university spokeswoman confirmed they were students. Attempts to reach listed numbers for them were unsuccessful.

Police say that the hazing happened at Harris’ off-campus apartment in Tallahassee and that at one point he stopped Golson and Hobson from hitting Hunter further. Hunter did not immediately return a call to her cell phone. Source

I am not here to knock FAMU, black sororities and fraternities, but during my undergraduate years at Ohio University, I recall incidents of hazing that led to pledges getting hurt, even one male student losing a kidney. I never had any desire to become part of a group that inflicts torture as part of the initiation process. To Ohio University’s credit, they adopted a no-hazing policy and any group that was caught hazing was banned from campus. It’s disturbing that this tradition is alive and well on some college campuses. No group is worth joining if you allow yourself to be subjected to hazing. Sorry. That’s just it, plain and simple.
