Report: FBI Allowed Informants to Commit Crimes at Least 5658 Times in One Year

The Federal Bureau of Investigation gave informants permission to break the law and commit crimes at least 5,658 times in one year, according to newly disclosed documents USA Today reports. The FBI enlisted the help of criminals to help battle crime.

The U.S. Justice Department ordered the FBI to begin tracking crimes by its informants more than a decade ago, after the agency admitted that its agents had allowed Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger to operate a brutal crime ring in exchange for information about the Mafia. The FBI submits that tally to top Justice Department officials each year, but has never before made it public.

Agents authorized 15 crimes a day, on average, including everything from buying and selling illegal drugs to bribing government officials and plotting robberies. FBI officials have said in the past that permitting their informants — who are often criminals themselves — to break the law is an indispensable, if sometimes distasteful, part of investigating criminal organizations.

“It sounds like a lot, but you have to keep it in context,” said Shawn Henry, who supervised criminal investigations for the FBI until he retired last year. “This is not done in a vacuum. It’s not done randomly. It’s not taken lightly.”

USA TODAY obtained a copy of the FBI’s 2011 report under the Freedom of Information Act. The report does not spell out what types of crimes its agents authorized, or how serious they were. It also did not include any information about crimes the bureau’s sources were known to have committed without the government’s permission.

Crimes authorized by the FBI almost certainly make up a tiny fraction of the total number of offenses committed by informants for local, state and federal agencies each year. The FBI was responsible for only about 10% of the criminal cases prosecuted in federal court in 2011, and federal prosecutions are, in turn, vastly outnumbered by criminal cases filed by state and local authorities, who often rely on their own networks of sources.

So, the National Security Agency snoops on phone calls, emails and social media footprint, while the FBI allows informants to commit crimes.

Fulton County Commission Head John Henry Eaves’ Son Robbed Near Morehouse College

John Henry Eaves, the Fulton County Commission chairman, posted a sobering note on Facebook about his son being robbed at gunpoint on his first day as a freshman at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Crime doesn’t take a day off and it can affect the very people you least expect. Who would have thought someone going off the college for the first time would encounter such an incident? Shameful.

I began my day with joy as I dropped off my son on his first day as a freshman at Morehouse College. I have ended my day bewildered as I just learned my son was robbed at gunpoint on the perifery of the Morehouse campus this evening by 2 thugs who stole his cell phone. Thank God my son, tho shakened, is alive and suffered no physical harm.

Right now I am experiencing a wide range of emotions…I am relieved and thankful that my first born is still with me, but I am also angry, pissed, and concerned. I am not very optimistic about the future of our community, especially when you look at the status of African American males. Too many African American boys have access to guns, too many of them drop out of high school, too many of them are in prison, and too many of them place little value on the lives of others.

I hope we will begin to change the dialogue of what OTHERS are doing to us and our communities, but we must focus on what WE can do to change the pathological self-destructive behavior that is occuring within OUR own communities.

Court Rules Oscar Grant’s Dad Can Sue Ex-BART Officer Johannes Mehserle for His Murder

Oscar Grant’s father can sue Johannes Mehserle, the former BART officer who fatally shot his son.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday rejected former officer Johannes Mehserle’s claim that he was acting in his official capacity when he killed the younger Grant during a 2009 New Year’s Day melee captured on video by several bystanders.

Violent demonstrations ensued after the videos showing the white officer shooting the unarmed black man were viewed by millions online.

The appeals court said it’s up to a jury to determine whether Mehserle was justified in shooting Grant in the back as he lay face down on the train platform.

Mehserle served 11 months in prison after he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

In his latest trial, Ayinde was found guilty of having sex with one of his daughters since she was eight years old. He received a 40-year sentence after being convicted in 2011 for sexually assaulting another daughter. So, that brings total number of  years he will be in prison to 90, so far.
