NEWSFLASH:  Richard DeCoatsworth’s bond set at $60 million after arrest for ‘severe criminal activity.’

Richard DeCoatsworth, who was hailed a ‘hero’ police officer and sat next to First Lady Michelle Obama during President Obama’s 2009 speech before Congress, was arrested and charged with rape, making terroristic threats, sexual assault and related offenses.

A source tells NBC10 former officer Richard DeCoatsworth, 27, met one of the women two weeks ago and forced her into prostitution at a local hotel. Between 2 a.m. Thursday and Friday evening, DeCoatsworth went to the woman’s home along North Howard Street in the Fishtown-Kensington area where there was a party, according to the source.

Once he arrived, DeCoatsworth forced that woman and a second woman, both in their 20s, to use drugs and perform oral sex on him at gunpoint, according to the source.

Police raided DeCoatsworth’s house on the 2700 block of Salmon Street in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. He was arrested and charged with rape, sexual assault, terroristic threats and related offenses. Police also confiscated drugs and guns from the home, according to a source. No word yet on what kind of drugs were removed from the home. Source

DeCoatsworth, 27, was shot in the face during a traffic stop in September 2007, managed to chase after his attacker, who was convicted and sentenced to 36 to 72 years in prison. He retired from the police force on disability in December 2011, after an investigation was conducted by Internal Affairs November 2011 over an alleged scuffle between he and another officer, Philly.com, reports. Richard DeCoatsworth, called a ‘thorn in the side’ of his neighborhood by a resident, reportedly amassed nine citizen complaints, accusing him of assault, abuse and misconduct, in his short time as a police officer.

GA State Rep. Tyrone Brooks Sr. Indicted on Fraud, Tax Charges

TYRONE BROOKS INDICTED:  Georgia State Rep. Tyrone Brooks Sr. (D-Atlanta) was indicted on fraud and tax charges for allegedly misappropriating nearly $1 million in charitable funds from Universal Humanities and the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials.

Brooks was charged by a federal grand jury in a 30 count indictment including charges of mail, wire and tax fraud. The indictment charges that from the mid 90s through 2012, Brooks solicited contributions from individuals and corporate donors to combat illiteracy and fund other charitable causes, but instead, used the funds to pay personal expenses.  Source

The indictment alleges Tyrone Brooks Sr. substantially underreported his income to the IRS for the years 2007 through 2011. Another black politician bites the dust. Sad way to end a long career in Georgia politics. It’s rather shameful, but he’s presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Here’s an excerpt from the FBI’s press release about the Tyrone Brooks indictment:

Universal Humanities Scheme

The indictment charges two fraud schemes, the first involving a tax-exempt charity, Universal Humanities, Inc., that Brooks established in the early 1990s. From at least 1995 through 2012,Brooks solicited contributions for Universal Humanities from corporate and individual donors purportedly to combat illiteracy in disadvantaged communities in Georgia and across the southeastern United States, eventually raising more than $780,000. Donors included the Coca-Cola Company ($400,000), Georgia Pacific Company ($140,000), Northside Hospital ($240,000), and others who gave smaller amounts. Brooks made specific false representations in his written solicitations about the work that Universal Humanities was doing to combat illiteracy and how the donated funds would be used, claiming that Universal Humanities had established literacy programs and was conducting workshops and tutoring and mentoring students. He also falsely claimed that Universal Humanities utilized a staff and operated under the direction of a board of directors.

The indictment alleges that in reality, Brooks did not use the donations to promote and address literacy in Georgia or elsewhere, or to retain a staff, occupy office space, fund workshops, hire instructors, or conduct programs attended by students. Instead, Brooks used the money to pay personal expenses for himself and members of his family, including home repairs, furniture, lawn service, life insurance, entertainment, personal credit card expenses, utility bills, food and clothing, dry cleaning, electronic equipment, jewelry, and payments on personal loans, among other personal expenses.

GABEO Scheme

A second related scheme charged in the indictment alleges that Brooks also diverted charitable donations he solicited on behalf of GABEO and used much of the money to pay personal expenses for himself and his family. GABEO is an organization of state, county, and municipal elected officials that promotes voter registration, crime prevention, literacy and economic empowerment initiatives.

The indictment alleges that Brooks solicited contributions to GABEO from corporations, organizations, and individuals. When Brooks was elected as GABEO’s president in 1993, the organization already maintained an official bank account at a local bank. This account was administered by GABEO’s treasurer, and disbursements required two signatures by GABEO board members. In December 1997, Brooks secretly opened a second GABEO bank account at a different bank. Brooks set himself up as the sole signatory on this account and had the account statements sent to his address rather than the address of the GABEO treasurer. Brooks then deposited the donations he solicited on behalf of GABEO into this undisclosed account, and used much of these funds to pay personal expenses for himself and his relatives.

Between 2002 and 2012, businesses, civic, religious groups, and individuals contributed approximately $300,000 to GABEO through Brooks, which he then deposited into the undisclosed GABEO account. The indictment alleges that Brooks misappropriated donations he solicited on behalf of GABEO from corporations, local teacher unions, small business owners, and individual donors—all of whom relied on Brooks’ assurances that the contributions were intended to further GABEO’s community activities. The GABEO board was unaware of this activity and did not approve these transactions. In fact, the indictment alleges that after Brooks began diverting donations, members of GABEO’s board of directors noted the organization’s apparent loss of most of its corporate donations.

Two Men Charged with Homicide and Robbery in Murder of Malcolm Shabazz in Mexico City

Two men have been arrested in the beating death of Malcolm X’s grandson, Malcolm Shabazz. He was murdered in Mexico after he and Miguel Suarez, who was deported from the U.S. in April, allegedly over a tab at The Palace Club.

The Associated Press described the bar as being “in an area of rough dive bars tourists are warned against going to. Suarez told the AP, ”We were dancing with the girls and drinking”  and were eventually asked to pay a tab of more than $1,000. When they refused to pay, all hell broke loose when the two men became separated.

Miguel Suarez said when he next saw Malcolm Shabazz, he had been badly beaten and later died in a local hospital. He reportedly died from blunt force trauma injuries.  The two men arrested were employees of the bar.

The  Agence France-Presse cites the Mexican news site Reforma, which reported authorities are seeking three other suspects, in addition to the two men arrested.

Mugshots of the three brothers — Ariel Castro, Pedro Castro, Onil Castro — arrested in the kidnapping of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight released. The women were reportedly raped by their captors and even restrained. There’s a name for these three, but I won’t say it.

Ariel Castro’s Brothers, Pedro and O’Neal Castro Arrested in Cleveland Kidnapping Case

CLEVELAND KIDNAPPING CASE:  Ariel Castro’s brothers, Pedro and O’Neal Castro, [Onil Castro] were also arrested in the case of the three missing Cleveland women who were found in his West Side Monday afternoon. Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus were kidnapped 10 and nine years ago, while Michelle Knight, the oldest, was kidnapped in 2002. They were found Monday afternoon after Charles Ramsey helped Amanda Berry.

Sources close to local station WOIO said the women were reportedly tied up during their captivity and police found chains hanging from one of the ceilings

They also reported there were signs that dirt had recently been moved in the backyard of the house, though police continue to investigate whether or not the dirt will lead to any new evidence in the case.

Records show that Castro was arrested for domestic violence and disorderly conduct in December, 1993, though details of this are not yet available.

He was also stopped six times by Cleveland Police between 1995 and 2008 for traffic violations.

In a press conference today, it was revealed that police were called to the house in January 2004, after Castro left a child on his bus at the depot. They were not able to get anyone at the home and police did not follow up on it. Source

It’s eerie that Ariel Castro’s son, who is also named Ariel Castro, but now goes by Anthony Castro, wrote an essay about Gina DeJesus’ disappearance, even interviewing her mother. He was a journalism student at the time. Here’s an excerpt from the essay:

Gina DeJesus’ disappearance has changed her neighborhood
by Ariel Castro

(Plain Press, June 2004) Since April 2, 2004 , the day 14-year-old Gina DeJesus was last seen on her way home from Wilbur Wright Middle School , neighborhood residents have been taken by an overwhelming need for caution. Parents are more strictly enforcing curfews, encouraging their children to walk in groups, or driving them to and from school when they had previously walked alone.

“You can tell the difference,” DeJesus’ mother, Nancy Ruiz said. “People are watching out for each other’s kids. It’s a shame that a tragedy had to happen for me to really know my neighbors. Bless their hearts, they’ve been great.”

On Cleveland ’s west side, it is difficult to go any length of time without seeing Gina’s picture on telephone poles, in windows, or on cars along the busy streets.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Police Chief Michael McGrath said he thinks Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were tied up at a house on Seymour Avenue in Cleveland owned by Ariel Castro.

WKYC reports, according to several police sources, the women found safe last night on Seymour Avenue were forced to have sex with their captors, resulting in up to five pregnancies. One of the sources reportedly said, that the captors would beat the pregnant girls. Both sources say the babies didn’t survive.
