Pearl MS Senior Investigator Mike Walters Shot and Killed Serving Arrest Warrant on Carnell Gaines
FALLEN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER: Senior Investigator Mike Walters was fatally shot as he and other detectives were attempting to serve warrants on Carnell Gaines at an apartment on Colony Park Drive in Pearl, MS, Tuesday morning.
The man was wanted for sexual battery of a minor and possession of child pornography. After entering the apartment the detectives located the man hiding in a bathtub. As the man resisted arrest the officers attempted to use a taser on him. He opened fire on the officers, striking Investigator Walters in the face and wounding two other officers. One of the wounded officers was able to return fire and killed the subject.
All three officers were transported to University of Mississippi Medical Center, where Investigator Walters succumbed to his wound approximately 40 minutes later. Source
Officer Walters, who played minor league baseball with the Houston Astros, is the first officer slain in the line of duty since Pearl incorporated in 1973, Police Chief Ben Schuler said. Mike Walters, who has served with the Pearl Police Department since 2009, is survived by his wife Jeanne Walters and 11 year old daughter Bailey.
