Windermere Police Officer Robert German was shot and killed early Saturday after he stopped to question a couple who were later found dead of suspected suicides.
Officer German called for backup around 3;30 a.m. after encountering a man and a woman, in their early 20s, who he deemed suspicious. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the officer shot. They had to take cover after two more gunshots were fired about a block away, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Those shots are believed to have claimed the lives of the two suspects.
The bodies of the unidentified deceased couple were found on the grounds of a multimillion dollar home, dead from suspected self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Officer Robert German, a five-year veteran of the Windermere Police Department, is survived by his parents. He graduated from Lake Mary High School, then studied at the Seminole State College police academy.
