It is preposterous that some people in the black community are giving gold medal gymnast Gabby Douglas a hard time over her hair. Naomi Campbell is living proof of what can happen when you rely on hair weaves and extensions to the extreme. This picture isn’t meant to mock Naomi Campbell, but we need to talk about the nexus between black women and their hair. On the flip side, her hair loss could be genetic.

I have been exploring the whole natural black hair phenomena after processing my hair with chemical relaxers since 1978. I am just tired of applying all those chemicals to my hair, so naturally (no pun intended), my interest was piqued by a recent MyFoxHouston story about natural hair black businesses thriving in the Houston area.

Many black women are turning to a more natural look for their hair and businesses catering to that rising trend is growing. According to Fox26, products that cater to the natural hair industry are worth a quarter of a billion dollars annually.
