Matthew Owens Beaten Outside AL Home by Group of Black Teens & Adults Saying ‘That’s Justice for Trayvon’

MATTHEW OWENS BEATEN BY BLACK MOB:  Matthew Owens was savagely beaten outside his Mobile, Ala., home Saturday by an angry mob of teens and adults after he told them to stop playing basketball outside his home. One person allegedly told him  ’that’s justice for Trayvon,’ the unarmed black teen who was shot to death by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in a Sanford, Fla., gated community.

The kids reportedly left the scene, only to reappear with adults in tow. Matthew Owens was hit with bricks, chairs, pipes and paint cans on his own front porch by 20 people after complaining about the noise. His sister, Ashley Parker, told WKRG the group attacking her white brother were all black, saying  ’it was the scariest thing I have ever witnessed.’ Matthew Owens was left bleeding on the ground and is in critical condition.

Even family and friends of Matthew Owens admit there was some tension on this street before Saturday night’s event. And they say a lot of this has to do with basketball. Relatives of the victim, who live on the street, say local kids often block Delmar Drive when they play basketball. They say it’s lead to some confrontations. Racial comments from both sides may have made the confrontations more toxic. Source

This is why cooler heads must prevail in the Trayvon Martin murder case. Too many people are taking the law into their own hands for all the wrong reasons and attacking innocent people. Matthew Owens had a right to tell the kids they were making too much noise outside his home. If you witnessed this savage beating, please call the police  at 251-208-7211, Crime Stoppers at 251-208-7000, or text a tip to 274637 and include the keyword CRIME 411.

UPDATE#1:  Terry Rawls, 44, was arrested and charged with first degree murder in the beating of white man, Matthew Owens, Mobile, Ala.

Ann Coulter: NRA's Proud History of Fighting KKK Airbrushed from History by Democrats (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Every now and then conservative windbag Ann Coulter makes a valid point, but then she goes back to being her onerous self. She wrote an article stating the National Rifle Association has gone to bat to blacks since the end of the Civil War, even taking a stand when civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was denied a gun permit because of his race. I have to be honest, I don’t care much for the whole gun debate, but I found Ann Coulter’s article pretty riveting. That doesn’t mean I agree with her on her positions on the issues, but she made a valid point that the Democrats and their then-offshoot, the Ku Klux Klan, were a thorn in the sides of blacks at the height of the struggle for racial justice and equality. But I guess the tables have turned now since that fringe element that has now swung to the Republican camp.

Here’s an excerpt from Ann Coulter’s article entitled, “Negroes with Guns” (note the title, which is meant to be provocative):

Gun control laws were originally promulgated by Democrats to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. This allowed the Democratic policy of slavery to proceed with fewer bumps and, after the Civil War, allowed the Democratic Ku Klux Klan to menace and murder black Americans with little resistance.

[..]

In 1640, the very first gun control law ever enacted on these shores was passed in Virginia. It provided that blacks — even freemen — could not own guns.

Chief Justice Roger Taney’s infamous opinion in Dred Scott v. Sandford circularly argued that blacks could not be citizens because if they were citizens, they would have the right to own guns: “[I]t would give them the full liberty,” he said, “to keep and carry arms wherever they went.”

[..]

After the war, Democratic legislatures enacted “Black Codes,” denying black Americans the rights of citizenship — such as the rather crucial one of bearing arms — while other Democrats (sometimes the same Democrats) founded the Ku Klux Klan.

[..]

Following the firebombing of his house in 1956, Dr. Martin Luther King, who was, among other things, a Christian minister, applied for a gun permit, but the Alabama authorities found him unsuitable. A decade later, he won a Nobel Peace Prize.  Source

So, while Ann Coulter’s screed about the NRA going to bat for blacks in the early days is quite riveting, let’s fast-forward to 2012 and the Trayvon Martin case, to see if her argument is strong. George Zimmerman, who murdered Trayvon Martin, has a right to bear arms, but the “stand your ground” law behind which he seems to be hiding doesn’t seem to be a plausible reason for why he shot the teen. You see, how one defines being threatened varies from person to person. Therein lies the problem with the “stand your ground” law. Besides, he formulated the opinion early in the encounter with the teen that he was up to no good and “they always get away.” He was told quite clearly not to follow him, but he did. He should have gotten in his car and sat there as the 911 dispatcher told him.

I am beholden to neither the Republican or Democratic parties. I find the Democratic Party has taken the black community for granted and the Republican Party doesn’t even try to appeal to the black community, but that’s for another debate. So, whether the NRA gives a hoot about blacks or not is quite irrelevant in this case. It doesn’t have a bone in this dogfight, other than the “stand your ground” law must be amended or abolished because it cannot adequately define what constitutes a threat to one’s life.  Nice try Ann Coulter, just remind blacks of what a group of whites did for them during one of the darkest periods in American history. Let’s be real. The NRA didn’t do all that you claim for the love of blacks. Further, I don’t believe one bit that KKK is making a comeback. Gone are the days of Jim Crow and seeing black men hanging from trees without public outrage and pushback.

Ken Lester Named New Judge in Trayvon Martin Murder Case, Jessica Recksiedler Recuses Herself

BREAKING NEWS:  Ken Lester named new judge in the Trayvon Martin murder case as Judge Jessica Recksiedler recuses herself. Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. has been on the bench for 15 years.

Kenneth Lester Sr. is a World War II veteran. He has a great deal of experience with criminal trials, including high profile cases such as Michael Reynolds for the stabbing deaths of a Geneva couple and their 11 year old daughter in 1998; and he sentenced ax murderer John Michael Buzia to death in the slaying of a 71-year-old Oviedo man.

He has a reputation of getting things done quickly. Well, experience on the bench is what’s needed in the George Zimmerman murder case. There’s a big difference between being on the bench for 15 years vs. 16 months, as was the case with Judge Jessica Recksiedler.

Judge Jessica Recksiedler Expected to Recuse Herself from Trayvon Martin Murder Case

Florida Circuit Court Judge Jessica Recksiedler is expected to recuse herself from the Trayvon Martin murder case Wednesday after George Zimmerman’s attorney called for her to step aside. You will recall we told you her husband, Jason Recksiedler works for CNN legal analyst Mark NeJame’s law firm.

Richard Land Apologizes for "Racist Diatribe" Against Trayvon Martin, Black Leaders

Richard Land, the president of the Ethics and Religions Liberty Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, has apologized for comments he made about President Obama and black leaders.

USA Today:  ”I obviously overestimated the extent of progress that has been made in slaying the racial dragon of our past. I should have remembered that whenever we have a discussion about race, the ghosts of our ancestors are in the room with us. And I underestimated the need to be extremely careful in how you address any controversial issue that involves race as a factor.

I am grieved that anyone would feel my comments have retarded in any way the Southern Baptists’ march toward racial reconciliation, which I have been committed to for the entirety of my ministry, since 1962.

I certainly apologize to anyone who was hurt or offended by my remarks.”

Richard Land previously said President Obama “poured gasoline on the racialist fires” when he commented on the Trayvon Martin case. He also  referred to Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson as a “mob” of “racial ambulance” chasers. He also said black men are “statistically more likely to do you harm than a white man.” He has yet to apologize for that comment.

What I don’t understand is how stupid people like Richard Land must think black Americans are. Um, on one hand you claim to be for inclusion and on the other hand you are fanning the flames of racial strife. Surely Mr. Land must realize he can’t have it both ways. If you are for inclusion, that means you can’t keep thrashing blacks and vice versa. Now he said his organization wants better relations with the black community. It’s really quite simply,  then don’t spew racist venom. The right wing evangelicals want to be free to dish it and want to force their views down the throats of everyone else.

Richard Land also issued an open letter of apology for his comments.

Marine Corps to Punish Staff Sgt. Suneel Mehta for “Racist” Trayvon Martin Tweet

Marine Staff Sgt. Suneel Mehta is facing disciplinary action for taking to Twitter to disparage the shooting death of unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin. He tweeted:

“Rifle range all day today. Shooting black all day like George Zimmerman!” Staff Sgt. Suneel Mehta said April 5 via Twitter, referencing the color of targets used during Marines’ weapons training. Word of his tweet spread, and a reader contacted Marine Corps Times, criticizing the Marine and calling his comment racist.

Mehta, a wire chief with Headquarters Company, 7th Marine Regiment, later told Marine Corps Times he was sorry for his “distasteful” comment, and he has since deleted his Twitter account.

Mehta is based at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif. A spokeswoman from the base provided an official statement:

“The unit is taking disciplinary measures for Staff Sgt Metha’s inappropriate comment posted on Twitter. The unit leadership is responsible for taking corrective action, while also continuing to educate unit members on proper social media etiquette in accordance with current rules and regulations.” Source

Um, any fool knows that you must be careful what information you write on social media outlets. Maybe he wasn’t being racist, but just plain stupid.

Trayvon Martin Murder Case: Judge Jessica Recksiedler Husband Works for CNN Legal Analyst Mark NeJame

Trayvon Martin Murder Case: Judge Jessica Recksiedler Husband Works for CNN Legal Analyst Mark NeJame (Mark NeJame Law Firm)

TRAYVON MARTIN MURDER CASE:  The latest wrinkle in the Trayvon Martin case is that Circuit Court Judge Jessica Recksiedler, who has been on the bench for only 16 months, said her husband, Jason Recksiedler (a personal injury lawyer), works for attorney Mark NeJame, who will do commentary on the case for CNN, where he just became a legal analyst.

Her husband Jason is the law partner of Mark Nejame, a defense attorney who was approached twice by the Zimmerman family to represent the man accused of killing Miami Gardens teenager Trayvon Martin. Nejame declined and referred them to Mark O’Mara, who took the case. Nejame then got a gig as a legal analyst on CNN, where he is a regular commentator on the case. Source: Miami Herald

In other words, Jessica Recksiedler may be forced to step down from the case due to a conflict of interest. It is interesting that George Zimmerman’s family had approached Mark NeJame and equally ironic that a judge with no experience handling high-profile murder cases is the one presiding over the trial. Judge Jessica Recksiedler should do the right thing and recuse herself from the case.

TRAYVON MARTIN MURDER CASE JUDGE JESSICA RECKSIEDLER:  Circuit Court Judge Jessica Recksiedler, a relative newcomer, has been assigned to George Zimmerman’s case. He will appear before her on May 29 for his arraignment. Recksiedler was elected to the bench in 2010, and has not had any experience with high profile murder cases, but that doesn’t mean she can’t handle such a case. Here’s a brief bio on Jessica Recksiedler:

Before she became a judge, Recksiedler worked as a prosecutor, handling juvenile sex crimes. She is a graduate of Stetson University’s law school, and she has been a lawyer for 15 years. She is also board certified, one of only 4,500 of 90,000-plus Florida lawyers deemed to be a specialist. In her case, the specialty is civil law. Source: Miami Herald

Education: Bachelor of science, accounting, Florida State University, 1994; juris doctorate, Stetson University College of Law, 1997

Political experience: None

Other experience: Extensive civil and criminal jury trial experience and handled cases in courts all over the state. Board certified and recognized jury trial expert by the Florida Bar, which requires extensive qualifications. As part of the evaluation to become board certified, I was evaluated by the judges I had cases in front of and the attorneys I tried cases against on my ethics, professionalism, knowledge and skills. I prepare, write and grade the seven-hour board certification exam as part of Board Certification committee as appointed by the Florida Bar.

Family: Husband, Jason; two children. Source

Judge Recksiedler seems to have very little experience as a judge and I am curious as to why the case wasn’t assigned to a more experienced judge given the high profile.
