Some Georgia College Students Getting by on Food Stamps

Some Georgia college students are using food stamps to survive. Isn’t that a low down dirty shame? Is this the new reality we are living with today?

Georgia’s college students are facing the prospect of the HOPE Scholarship paying less and less toward their tuition in the next few years.

So how are they dealing with rising tuition and fees? Many are working whatever part-time jobs they can rustle up, mornings, nights and weekends. But they’re also tapping into an unconventional form of student financial aid: food stamps. Source

This is problematic on so many levels. One, it’s a little hypocritical to tell students that a college education is their ticket to a better life and a good job, when they have to beg and borrow to stay enrolled. Second, the HOPE scholarship program is literally squeezing many students out because of its requirements. Third, where are the parents of these students who have no choice but to apply for food stamps and lastly, are these students living on campus or off-campus?

If you live on campus and have signed up for the meal plan, you shouldn’t have to worry about food, but I guess some have pared down their room and board to the bare minimum. Either way, if Cubans can go to college for free, why can’t we educate our kids with the least amount of financial constraints?

TN High School Principal Ted Horrell Apologizes for Saying Black Students “Less Smart”

Ted Horrell, principal at Germantown High School in Tennessee, issued an apology to parents and students for saying the school’s black students are “less smart,” according to a state report card issued this month, WREG reports. Ted Horrell had given out the results of the school’s state report card, which breaks down standardized test scores by race and income.

The assembly was meant to talk about how the school could close the achievement gap and introduced a new program to help struggling students. So being politically correct takes precedence over telling the truth. The test scores showed that the black students were doing worst than their peers. Was that a fact or was that an opinion? If it was factual, then how can it be called racist? We are allowing political correctness to cloud our better judgment. Of course, this was all about race and the parents are saying Ted Horrell shouldn’t air dirty laundry, particularly as it relates to black students.

Under New Illinois State Law, House Bill 3291, Online Threats Can Lead to School Expulsion

Under new Illinois state law, House Bill 3291, online threats can lead to school expulsion, so students beware of what you post on Facebook, Twitter and your own blog.

Students in Illinois must watch what they say online because anything that constitutes a threat can result in expulsion. Thanks to House Bill 3291, which passed last August and took effect New Year’s Day, the Chicago Sun Times reports. Whether they use Facebook, Twitter or blog, students who make online threats against other students or school staff face suspension or expulsion. Um, what happens to teachers who post derogatory statements about students?

While examples of abusive behavior by students have multiplied across the nation and studies suggest half of all teens have been victimized by cyber-bullies, the law’s impetus came from an incident at Oswego High School six years ago, Illinois House minority leader Tom Cross said.

When an Oswego student posted an online diatribe against his teachers in 2005, vowing “I’m so angry I could kill,” leaders at School District 308 weren’t sure what they could do, SD 308 spokeswoman Kristine Liptrot said.

The law allows administrators to discipline students who make any online threat that “could be reasonably interpreted as threatening to the safety and security” of another student or staff member. It was needed because existing laws “weren’t specific enough,” bill sponsor state Rep. Sidney Matthias said. “We’re making it clear to students that this is unacceptable behavior,” he added. Source: Chicago Sun Times

I am concerned that most education departments across the U.S., don’t have a social media policy in place for teachers and administrators, as well as students. For example,  in the state of Georgia, some middle school students were punished for writing some bad things on Facebook about a teacher. The punishment included suspension, but what happens when a teacher does the same thing?

Bronx HS Principal Sharron Smalls Under Fire for Facebook Picture

Sharron Smalls, principal at New York City’s Jane Addams High School, is under fire after a revealing picture was found on her Facebook page. The photo shows Sharron Smalls next to a topless man as he pours a dark liquid substance all over her. She is already under fire for alleged credit padding, by giving students credits for classes they didn’t take and by “double dipping” and crediting students for two courses when they only took one. The scandal sparked outrage because many of the students didn’t graduate due to lack of credits. Jane Addams High School recently received an F grade from the city and is in danger of being shut down.

Bronx high school principal Sharron Smalls used poor judgment, much like Debbie Napier Smith, who posed with a gun in a picture on her Facebook page. Again I have to ask, what is the social media policy in the Department of Education?

Dr. Zulema Blair, Former Head of Medgar Evers College Public Admin Dept. Says Slanderous E-Mail Got Her Fired

Former head of Public Administration at Medgar Evers College, Dr. Zulema Blair, claims she was fired after anonymous e-mail sent to CUNY President calling her a “staff slut,” who had a student’s baby.

Former head of Public Administration (for more on what the field of public administration involves check out this public administration degree site) at the CUNY school Medgar Evers College, Dr. Zulema Blair, is demanding Yahoo release the identity of the person who sent described her as a “staff slut” accusing her of having a student’s baby, in an anonymous e-mail, which led to her termination. The e-mail was sent to CUNY president William Pollard and other administrators.

Two weeks after university bosses received the message, the 33-year-old’s tenure was revoked and she was later sacked. Dr Blair, a mother of two, told the New York Post she denies having an affair with a student and regards the e-mail as a ‘character assassination’. She said: ‘This e-mail is slander. It’s horrific, and I want whoever sent this out to be punished.’ According to the Post, the e-mail, sent from disgruntledsue@yahoo.com, read: ‘You can’t turn a whore into a housewife, but you can definitely turn one into a Dean.’ Source

Dr. Blair’s attorney has filed court papers in Manhattan Supreme Court demanding Yahoo give up the personal details behind the e-mail account so they can file a law suit against the sender, the article said.
