One-Year-Old Marcus White Jr. Killed, Two Women Wounded in East Hills Pittsburgh Shooting

BREAKING:  A one-year old Marcus White Jr. was killed and two women injured at a picnic on East Hills Drive in Pittsburgh, Penn., just after 7:30 p.m. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the women was shot in the chest and was reportedly found lying on top of the baby. A second woman sustained a gun shot wound to the buttocks. They were transported to an area hospital.

Via Post-Gazette:  The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. off the 2300 block of East Hills Drive in the Second East Hills housing complex, where a group was picnicking in a cul-de-sac.

Possibly three gunmen got out of a vehicle and began firing at the crowd of people, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said. City homicide detectives do not believe that the victims were the intended targets, she said. No arrests had been made late Tuesday night.

Once again, we have thugs firing on crowds, as we saw in the New Orleans Mother’s Day second-line parade shooting. Akein Scott and his brother, who have ties to gangs, were arrested.

Philly Police Officer Jonathan Josey Acquitted in Puerto Rican Day Parade Assault

Philadelphia Police Officer Jonathan Josey acquitted of simple assault charge for decking a woman during a street party at last year’s Puerto Rican Day Parade. Municipal Court Judge Patrick F. Dugan said he was troubled by Officer Jonathan Josey’s conduct on the 10 second video that showed him hitting Aida Guzman from behind and knocking her to the ground.

Judge Dugan, however, cited his testimony that he was trying to swipe a beer bottle from her hand when he accidentally hit her. Philly.com reports, Josey said he “acted in the context of an escalating melee in which some spectators were throwing beer bottles at police trying to arrest a driver doing donuts in the middle of the intersection.”

Judge Dugan took other police testimony into consideration and also said the video alone was not enough to prove the officer meant to harm Aida Guzman. Jonathan Josey intends to seek reinstatement to the police department.

PA Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin, Two Sisters Found Guilty of Corruption

Justice Joan Orie Melvin (R) became the “second known Supreme Court justice to be convicted in nearly three centuries” in the U.S. Justice Joan Orie Melvin, who was “a member of Pennsylvania’s highest court was convicted Thursday of corrupting the election process in her campaigns to win a seat on the bench, triggering renewed calls to change the system of electing state judges,” the AP reports.

In addition to Justice Orie Melvin being charged with a crime, her two sisters are also mired in criminal proceedings. This is a real family affair. According to media reports, Orie Melvin and her older sister, Janine Orie, were convicted of theft-of-service charges and other crimes, while their younger sister, former senator, Jane Orie, was convicted last year and is serving up to 10 years in prison for illegally using staff to work on her campaigns. All three sisters were charged as part of the same conspiracy — using Melvin’s state-funding judicial staff and the state-funded staff of Jane Orie, to campaign for the Supreme Court when Melvin was a Superior Court judge in 2003 and 2009.

The sisters are staunch Republicans who are crying foul, saying their prosecution was the result of a political vendetta by Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr., who is a Democrat, because they opposed the expansion of legalized gambling. Um, really? Talk about the rise and fall of a political family.

Lower Merion Police Officer Sean Quinn Commits Suicide in FDR Park

A Lower Merion police officer Sean Quinn was found dead from a self-inflicted gun shot wound in FDR Park on Pattison Avenue in South Philadephia Monday morning. Officer Sean Quinn, 46, was last seen in Ardmore early Monday. He failed to report for duty at 7 a.m. Officer Sean Quinn reportedly had mental health issues.

The release did not detail why Quinn’s supervisors felt it necessary to notify other police departments that the officer was missing, but a city police spokeswoman said Quinn was believed to suffer from mental health issues.

Lower Merion Township public information officer Thomas Walsh declined to go in to detail regarding Quinn’s mental state. He did, however, say the officer was not fired but just failed to show up for work.

“We have no idea what he could be, where he is or what he is thinking,” Walsh said. Source

It would follow that someone with mental health issues shouldn’t be allowed to serve on the police force without medical intervention. It is time for mental illness to be taken seriously in this country.
