With the Internal Revenue Service under fire for targeting Tea Party groups, the sentencing of a former IRS worker,  Patricia Fountain, for conspiracy, tax fraud and extortion, will only increase the distrust the public has for the tax agency. Fountain, a Philadelphia mother of four,  stole more than $1.7 million in bogus refunds for the agency and was sentenced to 19 years in prison.

A jury in federal district court in Philadelphia convicted Fountain, 36, of conspiracy, tax fraud and extortion in March. She had worked as an IRS customer service representative for nearly a decade when she discovered in 2006 that the agency issued was issuing refunds for a telephone tax credits up to about $1,500 without verifying the filer’s information.

Fountain and her boyfriend, Larry Ishmael, recruited others from their North and West Philadelphia neighborhoods to pose as taxpayers seeking the credit, then collected a cut of the refunds each received from the agency.

She replicated the scam to steal money through similar credits offered by the agency – one for filers with student loans and another for first-time home buyers.

But when her straw filers didn’t send Fountain her cut of the money quickly enough, she punished them by filing another form that rescinded their credit request, prompting IRS letters that demanded the money back. Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

U.S. District Judge Stewart Dalzell slammed Patricia Fountain during her sentencing as being arrogant, a liar and her unwillingness to show remorse for her actions. She seems to be exhibiting the same level of arrogance as Lois Lerner, the high level IRS executive at the heart of the targeting scandal.

Ervin Mears Jr. Sues Sterling Regional HS for $40 Million After Son, Mawusimensah Mears, Cut from Track Team

SMH:  Ervin Mears Jr. filed a lawsuit against Sterling Regional High School in Camden County for $40 million because his son, Mawusimensah Mears, was kicked off the track team. Mears is also seeking varsity letters and championship jackets for the past two seasons, telling the Philadelphia Inquirer, “children have rights, just like any adult.”

Mears, a disabled veteran from Lawnside, filed the suit on his own, without a lawyer’s help.

He ran track in high school and the military and said his son “comes from a family of track winners.” The boy was the “undefeated champ” in the 200-, 400-, and 800-meter runs as an eighth grader at a Catholic school in 2010, the suit says.

That promise, his father said, should have translated into a key spot on the team when, as a ninth grader, Mawusimensah entered Sterling Regional High School in Somerdale. Sterling draws about 950 students from Magnolia, Hi-Nella, Somerdale, Stratford, Laurel Springs, and other towns.

But things started to sour in his son’s freshman year, Mears said, when he and his son’s track coach disagreed over which races his son should run.

It’s unfair, Mears said, that his son wasn’t allowed to compete, even though he may have been faster than some seniors who raced. “If he doesn’t qualify, then the clock will say he’s not fast enough,” said Mears, who worries his son may be losing out on the possibility of a college athletic scholarship.

“Let him get some exposure,” Mears said.

Unexcused absences from practice were the official reason Mears said he was given for his son’s dismissal. That’s an excuse, Mears said. A family death and injured leg kept his son away.

“Participation in extracurricular activities is a right,” Mears said. Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

As a parent of two athletes, I can’t tell you the countless times I have seen parents intervene and muck up the entire learning experience for their children. Good programs become mediocre and poor once decent parents realize a few parent-bullies are hijacking the sports for their kids. Mr. Mears feels that his sense of entitlement must be catered to at all costs. I didn’t think his son, Mawusimensah Mears, is another Usain Bolt and missing out on endorsement deals because he was kicked off the team.

One-Year-Old Marcus White Jr. Killed, Two Women Wounded in East Hills Pittsburgh Shooting

BREAKING:  A one-year old Marcus White Jr. was killed and two women injured at a picnic on East Hills Drive in Pittsburgh, Penn., just after 7:30 p.m. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the women was shot in the chest and was reportedly found lying on top of the baby. A second woman sustained a gun shot wound to the buttocks. They were transported to an area hospital.

Via Post-Gazette:  The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. off the 2300 block of East Hills Drive in the Second East Hills housing complex, where a group was picnicking in a cul-de-sac.

Possibly three gunmen got out of a vehicle and began firing at the crowd of people, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said. City homicide detectives do not believe that the victims were the intended targets, she said. No arrests had been made late Tuesday night.

Once again, we have thugs firing on crowds, as we saw in the New Orleans Mother’s Day second-line parade shooting. Akein Scott and his brother, who have ties to gangs, were arrested.
