Obama’s Berlin Speech Panned as “Weak, Underwhelming Address by a Floundering President”

It seems that President Obama pulled a Mitt Romney on his European trip — he bombed in Berlin. Well, that’s according to Nile Gardiner, who characterized President Obama’s speech as a “weak, underwhelming address from a floundering president.”

When John F. Kennedy delivered his “Ich Bin Ein Berliner” speech in front of the Brandenburg Gate on June 26, 1963, with 450,000 people in attendance. Ronald Reagan delivered his famous speech June 12, 1987, which included his famous call to “Tear Down This Wall.”

In stark contrast to that of his presidential predecessors, Barack Obama’s message on Wednesday was pure mush, another clichéd “citizens of the world” polemic with little substance. This was a speech big on platitudes and hopeless idealism, while containing much that was counter-productive for the world’s superpower. Ultimately it was little more than a laundry list of Obama’s favorite liberal pet causes, including cutting nuclear weapons, warning about climate change, putting an end to all wars, shutting Guantanamo, ending global poverty, and backing the European Project. It was a combination of staggering naiveté, the appeasement of America’s enemies and strategic adversaries, and the championing of more big government solutions.

[…]

But Barack Obama underscored again why he is no JFK or Ronald Reagan. In front of the Brandenburg Gate, Obama sounded more like the president of the European Commission than the leader of the free world. It is never a good sign when a US president parrots the language of a Brussels bureaucrat when he is supposed to be a champion of freedom. Obama’s distinctly unimpressive speech in Berlin was another dud from a floundering president whose leadership abroad is just as weak as it is at home.

The National Journal also had a similar take on President Obama’s speech, characterizing his trip as a “turbulent European vacation,” noting “he [President Obama] didn’t come away with much, winning just a smattering of applause from a crowd that was one-hundredth the size of JFK’s.” The crowd was also far less than the 200,000 Germans who witnessed his 2008 address as a presidential candidate. I guess the right is trying to make the argument that President Obama isn’t an international rock star any more. The NSA leaking scandal is weighing heavily on the minds of many, since the argument can be made that the U.S. is spying on everyone, even though other countries like Russia and China aren’t above reproach.

Right Wing Freak-Out Over Photo President Obama, Daughter Playing With Waterguns

The right wing never stops at manufacturing scandal after scandal. The latest freak-out is over the White House releasing a photograph of President Obama and his daughter playing with water guns by pool during Sasha’s birthday party at Camp David in 2011.   I would think the right wing is besides itself now that President Obama’s approval rating has taken a major hit due to the controversies swirling around his administration.

They are saying it’s hypocritical since “an elementary-school student gets suspended for merely mentioning the word gun, the picture instead stands as an image of hypocrisy, as the White House’s Twitter followers pointed out, The Blaze reported.” Really people? I am sorry, but I don’t believe President Obama ever told any school to suspend students mentioning the word “gun,” Red Alert reports. Melissa Quinn outdid herself by ending the article with this statement:  “As many across the Twitter-sphere react to the Father’s Day photo, they’re telling the President, “you should be suspended from the White House.””

President Obama gave a touching Father’s Day message during his weekly address, opening up about his absent father, Barack Obama Sr., who divorced his mother in 1964, three years after the birth of their son. President Obama emphasized the importance of involved fathers in their children’s lives.

“I never really knew my father,” Mr Obama said in the address. “I was raised by two wonderful grandparents. But I still wish that I had a dad who was not only around, but involved, another role model.

“That’s why I try to be, for Michelle and my girls, what my father was not for my mother and me.”

President Obama Cancels Safari Trip Over Security Costs, Right Wing Freak Out Anyway

President Obama Cancels Safari Trip Over Security Costs, Right Wing Freak Out Anyway. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Here we go again, every time President Obama and his family take a vacation, the right wing freaks out. President Obama cancels safari trip in Tanzania because of the cost of security, during his trip to Africa later this month. Of course, he won’t be applauded for it, instead,  someone chose to leak that snipers will be on hand to shoot any lions or other wild animals that come near the First Couple.

Any journey by the president, such as one scheduled next week for Northern Ireland and Germany, is an immense and costly logistical challenge. But the trip to Africa is complicated by a confluence of factors that could make it one of the most expensive of Obama’s tenure, according to people familiar with the planning.

The first family is making back-to-back stops from June 26 to July 3 in three countries where U.S. officials are providing nearly all the resources, rather than depending heavily on local police forces, military authorities or hospitals for assistance.

The president and first lady had also planned to take a Tanzanian safari as part of the trip, which would have required the president’s special counterassault team to carry sniper rifles with high-caliber rounds that could neutralize cheetahs, lions or other animals if they became a threat, according to the planning document.

But officials said Thursday that the safari had been canceled in favor of a trip to Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, where Nelson Mandela was held as a political prisoner.

The right wing hypocrisy is glaring. Not a word from anyone when former presidents George W. Bush, George H. W. Bush or Ronald Reagan went on vacation but they freak out when President Obama makes a move. Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also went to Africa and I can remember hearing any freak-out over those trips. Would President Obama’s critics prefer that he take Delta Airlines on official U.S. business?

Shannon Richardson Arrested in Connection with Ricin-Laced Letters Sent Obama, Bloomberg

Actress Shannon Richardson was arrested in connection with the ricin-laced letters sent to President Obama and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg late last month. It is unclear what charges will be filed against her.

Shannon Richardson, who has appeared on television including as a zombie on “The Walking Dead,” had originally called the FBI claiming her estranged husband was the person who sent a series of letters laced with small amounts of the toxin ricin to Obama, Bloomberg and Bloomberg’s top gun control lobbyist in Washington, D.C.

NY Times: Obama Administration ‘Has Now Lost All Credibility’ Over NSA Phone Scandal

With the recent wave of snooping ‘scandals’ rocking the Obama Administration, even the New York Times is jumping ship with a ‘scathing’ editorial saying, “the administration has now lost all credibility. Mr. Obama is proving the truism that the executive will use any power it is given and very likely abuse it.” Oh, wait, they quietly walked back the “lost all credibility” phrase and replaced it with “the administration has now lost all credibility on this issue.” No surprise there, but it contains no appending indication as to why it was changed.

…the Obama administration issued the same platitude it has offered every time President Obama has been caught overreaching in the use of his powers: Terrorists are a real menace and you should just trust us to deal with them because we have internal mechanisms (that we are not going to tell you about) to make sure we do not violate your rights.

Those reassurances have never been persuasive — whether on secret warrants to scoop up a news agency’s phone records or secret orders to kill an American suspected of terrorism — especially coming from a president who once promised transparency and accountability.

[…]

Essentially, the administration is saying that without any individual suspicion of wrongdoing, the government is allowed to know whom Americans are calling every time they make a phone call, for how long they talk and from where.

This sort of tracking can reveal a lot of personal and intimate information about an individual. To casually permit this surveillance — with the American public having no idea that the executive branch is now exercising this power — fundamentally shifts power between the individual and the state, and it repudiates constitutional principles governing search, seizure and privacy.

Tea Party Hero Judge Roger Vinson Who Struck Down Obamacare, Authorized NSA Verizon Order

The Tea Party seems to have a strange way of popping up into just about every dogfight in Washington D.C. and for all the wrong reasons. Roger Vinson, the same judge who struck down Obamacare as unconstitutional in 2011, signed off on the NSA court order to force Verizon to turn over records of millions of American customers.

Vinson ruled in 2011 that the individual mandate of the Affordable Health Act was unconstitutional. In his decision, Vinson wrote, “Everyone must participate in the food market.””… Under this logic, Congress could [mandate] that every adult purchase and consume wheat bread daily.” His ruling led to Obamacare being appealed to the Supreme Court.

Here’s are Roger Vinson’s signatures:

VERIZON SPYGATE:  The Obama Administration has found itself embroiled in yet another scandal, but this seems to be a throwback to George W. Bush administration and the NSA collecting phone records of Americans, not just those thought to be engaging in terroristic activities. The NSA is collecting phone records of millions of Verizon customers everyday, under a top secret order.  The White House has confirmed this practice and is defending it.  This more than the IRS snooping scandal is more troubling.

The Guardian:  The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an “ongoing, daily basis” to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.

The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk – regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing.

The secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (Fisa) granted the order to the FBI on April 25, giving the government unlimited authority to obtain the data for a specified three-month period ending on July 19.

Under the terms of the blanket order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls. The contents of the conversation itself are not covered.

The disclosure is likely to reignite longstanding debates in the US over the proper extent of the government’s domestic spying powers.

Under the Bush administration, officials in security agencies had disclosed to reporters the large-scale collection of call records data by the NSA, but this is the first time significant and top-secret documents have revealed the continuation of the practice on a massive scale under President Obama.

This is troubling for Americans and it speaks to the distrust many have of the government as being “Big Brother” snooping on everyone. So much for the land of the free. I do understand to a certain degree the need to monitor some activities since we have been hit by acts of terrorism sporadically and hate groups are on the rise. But where do you draw the line? Gathering the telephone records of millions of Americans who haven’t done anything wrong is just crazy. Why?

U.S. Job Creation Best in Five Years, Right Wing Continues to Attack Obama

As the right wing continue to claim that President Obama is one of the worst presidents in U.S. history, the improving economy continues to make a joke of their claims. Gallup just released data showing that the U.S. has had the best job creation in five years. Of course, the right wing will shrug that off and continue to attack President Obama.

“The Job Creation Index is now much improved from the all-time monthly low of -5 recorded in February and April 2009.”

“The net job creation score is based on 37% of workers telling Gallup that their employer is hiring new people and expanding the size of its workforce, and 15% saying their company is letting people go and reducing the size of its workforce. The percentage “hiring” is the highest since August 2008 and the percentage “letting people go” is the lowest since March 2008.”

Obama Nominates Patricia Ann Millett, Two Others to D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals

BREAKING NEWS:  President Obama nominates Patricia Ann Millett, Cornelia Pillard and Robert Wilkins to serve on the D. C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Of course, these nominations will start another fight with the Republicans.

NY Times:  The president called on Republicans to abandon what he called partisan obstruction of his judicial nominees and approve his nominees quickly.

“This is not about principled opposition. It’s about partisan obstruction,” Mr. Obama said. “What’s happening now is unprecedented. For the good of the American people it has to stop.”

“What I’m doing today is my job,” Mr. Obama said as he announced the nominations. “What I need is the Senate to do its job.”
