What Do Aaron Alexis, Adam Lanza and James Holmes Have in Common?

While the meme is about Washington D.C. Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis looking like President Obama’s son, we need to ask ourselves how many more mass killings we have to live through before something drastic is done about the mentally ill getting their hands on guns. One has to ask, what to Aaron Alexis, Adam Lanza and James Holmes have in common? AR-15 rifles and mental illness. Well, you could also add a fascination with violent video games too.

Aaron Alexis, seething over being slighted, killed 12 innocent people and injured eight. Adam Lanza killed 20  first grade students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. He also used a Bushmaster .223 to carry out his shooting rampage. James Holmes killed 12 people and wounded several during a shooting rampage in Aurora, Co., at the midnight showing the new Batman movie in 2012. He, too, used an AR-15 rifle that had a super-magazine attached. Alexis purchased a ‘very basic’ Remington model 870 shotgun for $419 from Sharpshooters Small Arms Range in Lorton, Virginia, the Daily Mail reports.

The New York Daily News responded to the massacre at the Washington Navy Yard with a front page Tuesday that decried one of the weapons suspected gunman Aaron Alexis reportedly had in his possession.

Under the headline “Same Gun Different Slay,” the Daily News used a photo of an AR-15 rifle and asserted that the “maniac” Alexis used the “Newtown weapon.” An AR-15 was used by Adam Lanza in last year’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. Daily News columnist Mike Lupica denounced the AR-15 as a weapon “made for murder” in Tuesday’s issue.

According to the Associated Press, Alexis had an AR-15, a shotgun and a handgun in his possession. But Pete Williams of NBC News reported on-air Tuesday that Alexis brought only a shotgun with him to the scene and somehow obtained the AR-15 after he made it onto the premises. There are reports that the FBI confirmed an AR-15 wasn’t used in the Washington Navy Yard shooting massacre, but that means nothing in my opinion. Aaron Alexis, with all the evidence of mental illness, was still able to get his hands on a gun. Like Adam Lanza, James Holmes, Jared Loughner, Seung-Hui Cho and others, mental illness is the common thread that links them together. President Obama brags about America’s exceptionalism. Then, the greatest place on earth shouldn’t be grappling with repeated mass killings.

David Sirota: Debate on How to Address Newtown School Shooting Would be Uglier if Shooter from Different Demographic

NEWTOWN SCHOOL SHOOTING:  David Sirota, a columnist with Salon.com, said if Adam Lanza belonged to a different demographic, the debate on how to address the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting would be “much uglier.” In other words, if the shooter was black or Hispanic, the discourse would be different. Consider the Drudge Report and how it race-baits about black-on-white crime?

During “Up with Chris Hayes” on Sunday, Hayes said the thought that policy makers in Washington will be moved to do something about this tragedy and that he could envision lawmakers calling for a more invasive surveillance regime. David Sirota, a guest on the show, responded that the political impediment to that was the fact that most mass shooting suspects are white.

Sirota said, “The issue with it will be, politically, I think; the profile is white men. That’s a profile that’s not, essentially, in America allowed to be profiled. That’s the one profile in America that’s not allowed to be profiled.”

President Obama Weekly Address: Nation Continues to Grieve for the Shooting Victims in Connecticut Massacre (Gunman Adam Lanza)

President Obama grieves for the 26 people, including 20 children, killed in Adam Lanza’s shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Friday morning. Among the dead are child victims Jesse Lewis, Grace McDonnell, Ana Marquez-Greene and principal Dawn Hochsprung, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and teacher Victoria Soto. More names will be disclosed soon. It’s also shameful that Mike Huckabee, a Fox News host, had the nerve to blame the shooting on God being taken out of schools.

NEWTOWN SCHOOL SHOOTING:  Adam Lanza, 20, identified as the gunman in the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. His brother, Ryan Lanza, was initially identified as the shooter, who killed 20 kids and wounded six adults, including his mother, Nancy Lanza; principal Dawn Hochsprung and guidance counselor, Mary Sherlach, at the school. There are now reports that Adam Lanza was mentally disabled. Right. I expected that excuse to surface.

According to media reports, witnesses said Adam Lanza was going from room-to-room shooting adults and kids, after first killing the principal and psychologist execution-style in the main office. Most of the massacre occurred in two classrooms, with one entire class unaccounted for.
