Democratic Party Judas Iscariots? West Virginia senior Democrats Sen. Joe Manchin, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and Rep. Nick Rahall will all skip the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte this summer. This comes on the heels of a state party resolution requiring all Democratic candidates to support the full Democratic ticket — Obama-Biden. It’s no secret that Manchin and Tomblin have inferred that they might not back Obama again.

Sen. Manchin believes that his day job is more important than supporting his party:

“I intend to spend this fall focused on the people of West Virginia, whether that’s representing them in my official U.S. Senate duties or here at home, where I can hear about their concerns and ideas to solve the problems of this great nation,” he said. “I will remain focused on bringing people together for the next generation, not the next election.”

Given West Virginia’s reputation of voting more conservative, I am not surprised Sen. Joe Manchin is taking this position. But if he can’t support a Democratic presidential ticket, then why not switch party affiliation and the Republican that he seems to be?
