BART Officer Tom Smith Killed By Fellow Officer When Gun Discharged During Home Search

FALLEN POLICE OFFICER: Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer Tom Smith was accidentally shot and killed by another officer while they conducted a probation check and warrant service at an apartment on Dougherty Road in Dublin Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect the officers were searching for was wanted for several robberies on BART property, Officer Down Memorial Page reports. Officer Tom Smith and his colleague made a forced entry into the apartment and that’s when a round discharged, striking Smith.

Officer Tom Smith was pronounced dead after being transported to Eden Medical Center. He served with the BART Police Department for 20 years.

Officer Tom Smith is survived by his wife and a six-year-old daughter.

You will recall that it was BART police officer Johannes Mehserle who killed unarmed black man Oscar Grant III a few years ago. This was the first time a BART officer was killed in the line of duty.

FALLEN POLICE OFFICER: Tupelo Police Officer Kevin ‘Gale’ Stauffer, 38, was shot and killed after responding to a robbery Monday afternoon at BancorpSouth. A 26-year-old officer is listed in critical condition.

The officers reportedly confronted the suspects and a gunfight ensued, leading to Officer Stauffer being fatally shot and the other officer wounded.

Officer Kevin ‘Gale’ Stauffer served with the Tupelo Police Department for eight years, according to his Facebook profile. He previously worked as a jailer for the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and served in the Louisiana Army National Guard.

FALLEN POLICE OFFICER:  Rockwell City Police Officer Jamie Buenting was fatally shot during a standoff at a home on Pleasant Street early Friday morning.

Officers had responded to the home about four hours earlier after receiving a report that Corey Trott, who was wanted for felony domestic assault, was at the Iowa home. He barricaded himself in the home after officers arrived on the scene. He fired a single shot hitting Officer Buenting.

He eventually surrendered to police about 5:30 a.m. He has been charged with first degree murder.

Officer Jamie Buenting, who is survived by a wife and two young children, had served with the Rockwell City Police Department for eight years. He served in law enforcement for a total of 12 years.

NOPD Police Seeking Driver of White Porsche Panamera After Off-Duty Officer Rodney Thomas Killed

New Orleans off-duty police officer Rodney Thomas was killed in a hit-and-run Saturday night on the eastbound I-1o, WVUE Fox 8  reports. NOPD police are searching for the driver of a 2011-2012 Porsche Panamera that reportedly fled the scene.

Police said the officer was involved in an accident on the high rise in his personal vehicle at about 1 a.m. When he got out of his vehicle to check the status of the other motorist he was struck by the Porsche. He was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital.

Westfield MA Police Officer Jose Torres Killed at Construction Site Accident

FALLEN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER: Westfield MA police officer Jose Torres was killed after being struck by a dump truck at a construction site while directing traffic at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Officer Torres was transported to Baystate Medical Center, but succumbed to his injuries two hours laters.

The Republican reports the construction site was part of a West Springfield water line project. The contractor on the project is listed as Revoli Construction of North Reading, Mass. Investigators from OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) were on the scene Thursday morning.

Officer Jose Torres, a 27 year veteran of the Westfield Police Department, is survived by a wife and two children. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Officer Jose Torres.

FALLEN POLICE OFFICER: Millville Patrolman Christopher Reeves was killed in a car accident early Sunday morning at the intersection of 3rd and Broad Streets in Millville, NJ.

Police said investigators in Cumberland County have launched an investigation, but did not elaborate on the specifics of the accident.

Patrolman Reeves was an eight-year veteran of the Millville Police Department. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer’s family.

FALLEN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER:  Brevard County Deputy Sheriff Barbara Pill was fatally shot during a traffic stop  in Melbourne, FL, shortly before 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. She was shot multiple times by Brandon Lee Brantley, 22, who was driving in the car with Andrea Michelle Kirshner, 19.

The vehicle was wanted in connection with a stolen property call from a local motel. As Deputy Pill made contact with the driver of the vehicle he opened fire on her, striking her multiple times. Responding deputies, Melbourne police officers, and Florida troopers chased the vehicle a short distance until it crashed on Turtlemound Road. A male and female subject in the vehicle were taken into custody.

Deputy Pill was transported to the Holmes Regional Medical Center where she succumbed to the gunshot wound. Source
