Gun Debate: US Represents 4.4% of World’s Population, Own 46% of World’s Guns

GUN DEBATE:  Gun ownership in the U.S. is at an all-time, as gun violence continues to plague certain pockets of the U.S. Six month old Jonylah Watkins was shot multiple times on a Chicago street in a drive-by shooting, as her father changed her diapers. She died Tuesday morning.

Numbers Sleuth found a nearly 1-to-1 ratio, Americans lead the world in gun ownership. But does that make us any safer? No. Not when innocent people are losing their lives everyday to gun violence.

REPORT:  THE UNITED STATES OF GUN OWNERSHIP

  • 75% of American gun owners have two or more guns
  • The U.S. accounts for 4.4% of the world’s population and 46% of the world’s guns
  • Wyoming leads gun ownership by state (60%); D.C. is last (4%)
  • 2 out of 5 guns sold in the U.S. are without background checks
  • For every time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were four unintentional shootings, seven criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides.

Conservative pollster Frank Luntz says the National Rifle Association isn’t listening to Americans, as it digs in on any new gun control measures in the wake of the Newtown shooting massacre that claimed 26 lives and the Webster firefighter shooting. He told Politico that the NRA is “out of touch.”

Politico:  Frank Luntz said, “The public wants guns out of the schools, not in the schools. And they are not asking for a security official or someone else. I don’t think the NRA is listening. I don’t think they understand most Americans would protect the Second Amendment rights and yet agree with the idea that not every human being should own a gun, not every gun should be available at anytime, anywhere, for anyone. At gun shows, you should not be able to buy something there without any kind of check whatsoever.”

A discussion about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre leads to Lester Davis allegedly firing his gun in the direction of another man at the All Cuts Barber Shop in Wentzville,  MO.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: One of the patrons was discussing last week’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown and commented that the incident “makes me want to murder the suspect,” police said.

For unknown reasons, (Lester) Davis took the comment as a threat and asked, “You want to murder me?” Davis then walked out to his Volkswagen sedan, retrieved a loaded Smith & Wesson 9 mm pistol and fired three times in the customer’s direction, police said.

Lester Davis has been charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a weapon. He is in jail and his bail set at $400,000, the newspaper reports. This is proof some people shouldn’t be allowed to own a gun, period.

President Obama talked about gun control in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre that claimed the lives of 20 children and six teachers in Newtown, CT, last Friday. He set a January deadline for gun control proposal. He appointed Vice President Joe Biden to led the commission charged with coming up with a set of proposals. He urged Congress to vote early 2013 to ban assault weapons, high capacity magazines & gun show background check loophole. Um, I dare the Republicans to play politics with the lives of innocent people.

President Obama’s comments comes as adulterer Newt Gingrich blames the Newtown school shooting on an “anti-religious” secular government. Um, another self-righteous windbag. He told host Brian Thomas of 55KRC:

When you have an anti-religious, secular bureaucracy and secular judiciary seeking to drive God out of public life, something fills the vacuum. And that something, you know, I don’t know that going from communion to playing war games in which you practice killing people is necessarily an improvement.
