FIASCO:  Must we always air our dirty laundry in public? I am referring to rapper Lupe Fiasco, who proved he was a fiasco,  after being thrown off the stage at StartUp RockOn inaugural concert. Hypervoal said he was thrown off because of a “bizarrely repetitive, jarring performance that left the crowd vocally dissatisfied”. Some believe he was kicked off because of his anti-Obama rant.

Although Fiasco was booked as the headliner for the StartUp RockOn concert in celebration of Obama’s reelection, the 30-year-old Chicago rapper apparently had no plans to cheer the current administration. Instead, after taking the stage at The Hamilton in Washington, he reportedly announced that he didn’t vote for the president in the 2012 election and spent more than 30 minutes performing an anti-war song. Simply a disgrace. If he felt that way, then why even bother perform or even show up in Washington D.C.? There’s a time and place for everything. Obama haters will love it, but it was simply disrespectful.

StartUp RockOn is all about startups helping startups. At Sunday night’s Inauguration Celebration at the Hamilton Live, organizers set out to honor innovative visionaries with grants, accolades and a party worthy of the success we achieved at the RNC and DNC this summer.

Lupe Fiasco performed at this private event, and as you may have read, he left the stage earlier than we had planned. But Lupe Fiasco was not “kicked off stage” for an “anti-Obama rant.” We are staunch supporters of free speech, and free political speech. This was not about his opinions. Instead, after a bizarrely repetitive, jarring performance that left the crowd vocally dissatisfied, organizers decided to move on to the next act.

The party continued as planned, and we celebrated the announcement of CodeNow’s winning the Grant Challenge. CodeNow is a non-profit startup based in Washington DC that teaches “underrepresented high school students basic skills in computer programming.”
