Congressional Black Caucus Recommends Sheila Jackson-Lee for Homeland Security Secretary

Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee for Department of Homeland Security Secretary? No, it’s not a joke. The Congressional Black Caucus is recommending that President Obama nominate Jackson-Lee to replace outgoing secretary Janet Napolitano.

A letter  dated July 25 and signed by CBC Chairwoman Rep. Marcia Fudge, an Ohio Democrat, urges President Barack Obama to consider Jackson Lee for the position formerly held by Janet Napolitano, the first woman to hold the position. Napolitano resigned earlier this month to become president of the University of California.

“Representative Jackson Lee would serve as an effective DHS Secretary because she understands the importance of increasing border security and maintaining homeland security,” the nomination letter reads.

Since entering Congress in 1995, Jackson Lee has served on several committees, including Foreign Affairs, Judiciary and Homeland Security, in which she was the Chairwoman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection.

“As Chairwoman, Representative Jackson Lee supported increased airplane cargo inspections and increased security for railroads, issues of great importance to the security of this nation and its citizens,” the letter continues.

Jackson Lee currently holds the post of Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, a position that the CBC says she “stands as a strong and honest ‘voice of reason.’” Source: Houston Chronicle

Voice of reason? This is the same woman who said we need more black sounding names for hurricanes and who sought to have the House of Representatives pass a resolution to honor Michael Jackson as a humanitarian after his death. She once said, President Obama’s Buy American, should be Buy African American. She also opined that opposition to President Obama on raising the debt ceiling was due to him being black..

Report: Saudi Arabia Sent Written Warning About Boston Bombing Suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev

*****CAUTION:  Pam Gellar and the other right wingnuts are going nuts over this ‘bombshell’ and pointing a finger at the Obama Administration. Um, consider the source of this “bombshell.” The author of the article is David Martosko, who recently left The Daily Caller, where he served as Executive Editor. Tucker Carlson has presided over several instances of shoddy journalism, at best. So, please, before running with this, consider the source.*****

The Boston Marathon bombing is starting to look a lot like the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, but just on a smaller scale, it would seem to some people. If the report from the Daily Mail is true, then it seems that once again an intelligence agency has dropped the ball and the twin bombings were entirely preventable.  We now hear that not only was the FBI warned about Tamerlan Tsarnaev by the Russians, the Saudi government had warned the Department of Homeland Security about him and the company he was keeping. Seems like Big Sis, Janet Napolitano, may have nodded off on this one too. Again, that’s if this report from the Daily Mail is true.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia sent a written warning about accused Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in 2012, long before pressure-cooker blasts killed three and injured hundreds, according to a senior Saudi government official with direct knowledge of the document.

The Saudi warning, the official told MailOnline, was separate from the multiple red flags raised by Russian intelligence in 2011, and was based on human intelligence developed independently in Yemen.

Citing security concerns, the Saudi government also denied an entry visa to the elder Tsarnaev brother in December 2011,when he hoped to make a pilgrimage to Mecca, the source said. Tsarnaev’s plans to visit Saudi Arabia have not been previously disclosed. Source

It’s funny how this isn’t being reported by the U.S. mainstream media and that a British rag picked this up. It should be noted that the Obama Administration denies the Daily Mail’s report of the Saudi warning.

A DHS official denied, however, that  the  agency received any such warning from Saudi intelligence  about Tamerlan  Tsarnaev.

‘DHS has no knowledge of any communication  from the Saudi government  regarding information on the suspects in the Boston  Marathon Bombing  prior to the attack,’ MailOnline learned from one Homeland  Security  official who declined to be named in this report.

The White House took a similar view. ‘We and  other relevant U.S. government agencies have no record of such a letter being  received,’ said Caitlin  Hayden, a spokesperson for the president’s National  Security Council.

Old habits die hard. Treat this “bombshell” with a healthy dose of skepticism because of its links to The Daily Caller.

***UPDATE#1 (05/01/13) — The Saudi government denies the Daily Mail’s story written by ex-Daily Caller editor, saying “it didn’t have any prior information about suspected Boston Marathon bombers — via @NBCNews.

Homeland Security Deputy Jane Holl Lute to Resign, Defends Internet Civilian Role

Jane Holl Lute, Department of Homeland Deputy Secretary, said she will resign shortly to pursue a role in international Internet affairs.

Lute said that she was leaving with the department on a strong footing in Internet matters, with its central role cemented by an executive order on cybersecurity issued by President Barack Obama in February.

The order directs the civilian Department of Homeland Security to steer improvements in protections for private industry, instead of giving the lead to the military’s National Security Agency.

The preeminence of Homeland Security in patrolling the Internet is a big change from when Lute arrived there.

“The national narrative on cyber has evolved,” she said. “It’s not a war zone, and we certainly cannot manage it as if were a war zone. We’re not going to manage it as if it were an intelligence program or one big law-enforcement operation.” Source

Hillary Clinton Unveils New Website, Laying Groundwork for 2016?

Is Hillary Clinton laying the groundwork for a 2016 presidential run? It’s also interesting to note there’s some buzz about DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano having presidential ambitions.

Talking Points Memo:  Hillary Clinton appears to have a new website. So far, has a picture of the former secretary of state and a form for contacting her.
