Cook County Sheriff’s correctional officer, Javier Acevedo, killed his wife, Chicago Police Officer Veronica Acevedo, then turned the gun on himself in what appears to be a murder-suicide in their Southwest Side home Sunday.
Cook County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cara Smith said someone inside the home, located in the 5300 block of South Austin Avenue, called 911 shortly after 5 a.m. Police found the couple unresponsive when they arrived at the Garfield Ridge home.
Veronica Acevedo, 50, served with the CPD for 18 years and won 23 department awards during her career, Chicago Police Officer Jose Estrada said.
Javier Acevedo, 50, worked as a Cook County Sheriff’s correctional officer for 25 years. He had been working in Division 8 of the county jail, Smith said. Police have launched a homicide investigation.
