LIAR, LIAR:  The National Rifle Association aired a “reprehensible” ad attacking President Obama’s daughters having Secret Service protection, while other students have no armed guards in their schools. The NRA also claimed in a television ad that the Sidwell Friends School that the Obama girls attend has 11 armed guards. Um, one problem — that’s not true. The school has a team of security officers who carry no firearms.

My Post colleague Glenn Kessler, who writes The Fact Checker column, wrote about the issue here and quoted Ellis Turner, associate head of Sidwell Friends, as saying: “Sidwell Friends security officers do not carry guns.” Parents and students say they have never seen one either.

The president’s children are protected by Secret Service agents, which is required by federal law, but that is not the same thing as armed school resource officers.

The Fact Checker, who hands out “Pinocchios” depending on how accurate — or inaccurate — a particular story is, gave the NRA and its ad the worst possible rating, four Pinocchios. Whereas three Pinocchios are given for “significant factual error and/or obvious contradictions,” four Pinocchios are given for “whoppers.” Source

When will they learn that anything coming from should be verified and cross-verified for accuracy. When will the NRA realize that the majority of Americans want something done about the accessibility of guns to just about anyone?

Here’s the NRA ad built on a LIE:

GOP Pollster Frank Luntz: “Don’t Think the NRA is Listening” to Americans Over Gun Control After Newtown Shooting

Conservative pollster Frank Luntz says the National Rifle Association isn’t listening to Americans, as it digs in on any new gun control measures in the wake of the Newtown shooting massacre that claimed 26 lives and the Webster firefighter shooting. He told Politico that the NRA is “out of touch.”

Politico:  Frank Luntz said, “The public wants guns out of the schools, not in the schools. And they are not asking for a security official or someone else. I don’t think the NRA is listening. I don’t think they understand most Americans would protect the Second Amendment rights and yet agree with the idea that not every human being should own a gun, not every gun should be available at anytime, anywhere, for anyone. At gun shows, you should not be able to buy something there without any kind of check whatsoever.”

NRA’s Wayne LaPierre Blames Media as “Silent Enablers If Not Complicit Co-Conspirators” in Shooting Massacre

The National Rifle Association held a press conference and blamed everyone under the sun, except admitting that a ban on assault weapon would be a good starting place to curb the mass shootings that we have experienced over the past few years, with increasing frequency and intensity. Wayne LaPierre blamed the media as “silent enablers if not complicit co-conspirators” for allowing violent culture to come into children’s homes.

He said we care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service, but when it comes to our kids, we do the opposite.  The press conference was interrupted twice by protesters yelling “blood is on the hands of the NRA” and “the NRA is killing our children.” He also claims that an armed security guard would have stopped Adam Lanza.

Wayne LaPierre called on Congress to appropriate funds to put armed security guards in schools before January. He asked what if Adam Lanza was confronted by an armed security at Sandy Hook Elementary School? That armed security guard could have also been killed if he was taken by surprise and the shooting massacre would have still occurred. Three words to describe Wayne LaPierre — bat-shit crazy.

Wayne LaPierre said former congressman Asa Hutchinson will help with its new “National School Shield” program. His insensitivity is mindboggling — blaming everyone else for the horrific tragedy that befell Sandy Hook Elementary School such as Congress,  President Obama, foreign aid, movies,  music videos, sports stadiums, the people who oppose the NRA, the video game manufacturers, Hollywood, the medical community. If you can stomach the bullshit click on the “transcript” link below to read his comments or watch the video.  Wayne LaPierre had a public meltdown during this so-called press conference and if anything, it is further proof that gun control is a must.

It would seem that Mr. LaPierre forgot Columbine High School had an armed guard, Neil Gardner, a sheriff’s deputy, who was assigned to watch Columbine High School, as a community resource officer. He  usually ate lunch with the students, so he could be in the school. On that day, he was called to the “back lot” when the custodian found the first body. Needless to say, the gunmen wreaked havoc, even though an armed officer was on the school grounds.

In closing, in case Wayne LaPierre doesn’t realize this, here are the results of a PPP poll which show  63-64% support for assault weapons and high capacity magazine bans, while 76% support for closing the gun show loophole, and 93% support for mandatory criminal background checks before selling guns. While he was delivering his diatribe, four people were killed in Frankstown Township, Pa., including the gunman, and three state troopers were injured. Um, I guess now we need a police officer or armed guard stationed on every street in the U.S. No need for gun control.

UPDATE:  The American Federation of Teachers responded to the NRA statement:  “Schools must be safe sanctuaries, not armed fortresses. “

Former RNC chairman Michael Steele called the NRA’s statements “very haunting and very disturbing.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said armed guards won’t make schools safer:  “In general I don’t think that the solution to safety in schools is putting an armed guard because for it to be really effective in my view, from a law enforcement perspective, you have to have an armed guard at every classroom,” he said during an event in Newark Friday morning. “Because if you just have an armed guard at the front door then what if this guy had gone around to the side door? There’s many doors in and out of schools.”
